The motion is carried
Campus Notes

The motion is carried It seemed like a dream trip — a lovely locale, a chance to escape the searing heat of the plains and spend a few days in the hills, and above all, to interact with really sharp students from various schools as they debated for the coveted 1st position in the Revd. Dr Samuel Slater Memorial Invitational Debates. And it lived up to its billing.
Doon School, Dehra Dun, won the debate this year, but it was a tough fight as they battled with honours with 14 teams fielded by some of the top schools of the country. The format for the debates is set on the Cambridge pattern (three against and three for the motion), and there are at least three judges for each debate. This writer was a judge at the debates, held at Shimla last week, in which the participating schools were Auckland House School, Shimla; Cathedral & John Connon School, Mumbai; La Martiniere for Girls, Kolkata; La Martiniere College for Girls, Lucknow; Loreto House, Kolkata; Mayo College for Girls, Ajmer; Rashtriya Indian Military College, Dehra Dun; St. James School, Kolkata; The Assam Valley School, Assam; Sri Ram School, Gurgaon; Doon School; Sagar School, Tijara; Welham Girls School, Dehra Dun; Vasant Valley School, New Delhi, and of course, the hosts, Bishop Cotton School (BCS), Shimla Now here they were, these 30 girls and 33 boys who were guests at an all-boys school. Interacting with the staff members one found out that when the first Slater debates wereheld in 1995, there were apprehensions about hosting girls in the school, where only a previous Headmaster’s daughter had been a student. Happily, the experience has been positive, and as Headmaster Roy Christopher Robinson said: “For the last few days, we have not had to check if the boys are properly turned out, they are at their best.” He did, however, realistically expect the situation to revert to “normal” once the guests left. It was obvious that much hard work had gone into the preparation and execution of the event, for which much of the credit was given to Rev Joy Halder and his team of staff members. The participants had worked hard too—any of the 34 topics sent to them a month earlier could be debated, and they would have just about three and a half hours after the draw of lots. What were the topics like? Well, they included: “The caste war has intensified in India”; “Machines have taken over music”; “Consumerism is the new religion of youth”; “Languages must be allowed to die a natural death”; “Monuments in India face a fate worse than death”; “Indian Cinema is poised to go global” and a play on the BCS moto: “Overcome evil with good—easier said than done!” There were some interesting turns, while the predominantly male team from the Vasant Valley School was for the motion “Daughters are just as able to carry on the legacy of their parents,” the team from Mayo Girls had what seemed to be the difficult task of speaking against the motion, till they turned it around and said daughter were more capable! The final debate was on “News channels have become ‘news creators’ rather than news reporters”. What a spirited debate it became, with the Vasant Valley team rising to the occasion. However, they were no match for the Doon School boys, especially Shikhar Singh, who had garnered impressive content and marshalled his facts well, which he delivered with poise and gravity that belied his age. No wonder he won the George Edward Lynch (GEL) Cotton Trophy for the Best Speaker, while the GEL Cotton Trophy for the Most Promising Speaker went to his opponent, Shaman Marya of Vasant. The Courage in the Face of Adversity award went to Vedant Munshi of St James. Interacting with the participants after the debates was also a joy since they have their goals and are focused on them. This stood out in sharp contrast with some of the boys that we met. They are drifting along, not quite sure about what they would do. The participants at the debate definitely represent the bright future of the nation. The skills that they have learnt in debating will surely help them forge a bright future. |

Campus Notes The recent move of the MDU administration to replace Controller of Examinations (CoE) K.C.Dadwal with a junior Deputy Registrar has triggered a debate amongst the university fraternity. The decision to replace Dadwal was reportedly taken following a state government's communiqué regarding the matter. In the letter sent to acting Vice-Chancellor and Rohtak Division Commissioner N.C.Wadhwa, it was stated that several complaints had been received regarding the functioning of the department concerned. Following this, an inquiry was ordered into the allegations and Dadwal removed from the post during the pendency of the inquiry. However, the hasty manner in which Dadwal has been replaced with Sukhbir Singh has raised many an eyebrow. Firstly, because there was reportedly not any such specific complaint against Dadwal which warranted his removal. Secondly, Dadwal has served on several important positions in the university administration and has a clean and outstanding track record. In fact, he is the man behind streamlining the examination system of the university, including the PMT, during his tenure as the CoE. Senior MDU officials and faculty members feel that there was neither any need nor urgency to remove Dadwal, especially without going into the merit or authenticity of the complaints. Moreover, the direct interference of the state government in getting a key university official removed from his post exposes the empty claims of autonomy for universities. The issue assumes significance in view of the approaching pre-medical entrance examination. Meanwhile, Deputy Registrar U.S.Dalal has been given the charge of Finance Officer, as the previous incumbent Sukhbir Singh has been made Controller of Examinations in place of Dadwal. Examination schedule
The MDU authorities have announced the schedule for annual examinations of M.Ed, Bachelor of Physical Education and B.Sc (Human Nutrition and Dietetics) courses. A university spokesperson informed that the M.Ed examinations will be held from May 21 to June 6. The timings of the examinations will be from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. The university administration has also notified the schedule for the annual examinations of the Bachelor of Physical Education and B.Sc (Human Nutrition and Dietetics) Part I. The Bachelor of Physical Education examination will be held from May 15 to May 31 and the B.Sc (Human Nutrition and Dietetics) examination will be held from May 15 to June 5. Meanwhile, the annual PG examinations of the university are going on smoothly, the spokesperson
added. — Contributed by Sunit Dhawan |
