Hasina back home to cheers

Dhaka, May 7
Bangladesh former Prime Minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina returned home today from London after winning a battle against the country’s military-backed caretaker government that had blocked her homecoming.

Hasina who ruled the country from 1996-2001, flew in Zia International Airport by a flight of the Etihad Airways under tight security cover this afternoon.

Witnesses said despite the state of emergency that banned processions and rallies, thousand of her followers staged welcoming procession. Police escorted Hasina’s car. ''Good sense prevailed upon the government in lifting the restriction on my return. I hope the government would not repeat the mistake,'' Hasina told the journalists.

Asked if she apprehends confinement like that of immediate past Prime Minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia, she said the government had already made a mistake by obstructing her homecoming. Meanwhile, two criminal charges of extortion of three crore takkas and political murder have been filed against her. Although a magistrate court here had issued warrant of arrest against her, but later the same court suspended. — UNI
