Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 14
The Gujarat government told the Supreme Court today that one of the three arrested officers of the state has confessed to his role in the staged killings of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife.

In a fresh status report, which was submitted to the court, into the investigations being conducted by the state police, Inspector General of Police Geeta Johri has mentioned that three more officials have been arrested for their roles in the November 2005 killings. A counsel of the state government stated this.

The report also states that one of the police officers whose statement was recorded in the presence of a magistrate has confessed to his role in the killing of Sohrabuddin, a resident of Ujjain.

The court was also informed about the arrest of seven police officers and that some other arrests were imminent. According to Johri, scientific evidence was awaited in the case and the investigation conducted was consistent with the guilt of the accused arrested so far.

The report was submitted to the court in a sealed cover and it observed that the police had obtained the records of the telephonic conversations of the accused persons before and after the killings.

Johri submitted to the court in her report that the government would file a separate report about the role of the AP police in the crime.
