88,056 given polio drops

Chandigarh, May 20
A total of 88,056 children were administered two additional drops of polio vaccine during the first day of the pulse polio immunisation campaign here today.

As many as 454 stationary and 93 mobile booths were set up at locations convenient to people and these were manned by 2,100 personnel drawn from the departments of health, education, social welfare and police, said a spokesman for the Chandiagarh administration.

Now, pulse polio teams would conduct house-to-house survey tomorrow and the day after for immunising the left-out children in the age group of 0-5 years.

UT home secretary Krishna Mohan, while expressing gratitude to various NGOs, social and religious leaders, and other institutions for their active participation in the campaign, urged all citizens to cooperate with the pulse polio teams during their house-to-house survey.

Medical officer bereaved

Chandigarh, May19
Savitri Devi, mother of Dr G.C. Bansal, medical officer of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation and vice-president of the Indian Association of Solid Waste Management, died today following a brief illness. She was 75.

A number of senior officials of the MC expressed grief over her death. — TNS

260 donate blood for thalassaemics

As many as 260 persons donated blood at the camp organised by the Thalassaemic Children Welfare Association, Chandigarh, here today.

The camp was conducted at the PGI by a team of doctors and technicians headed by Dr Neelam Marwaha, head, department of blood trans-fusion.

Dr K.K. Talwar, director, PGI, thanked the association for the noble cause.

Wrestling
WCC, SD College bag trophies

Wrestling Coaching Centre (WCC), Sector 30, and SD College, Sector 32, won overall trophies in the sub-junior and junior boys categories, respectively, in the Chandigarh State Sub-Junior and Junior Wrestling Championships that concluded at the Wrestling Coaching Centre in Sector 30 today.

In junior boys +96 category, Jagmeet beat Ashwani to clinch the top honours in freestyle category, whereas in sub-junior freestyle (+85 kg), Kamaljit thrashed Ajay.

Dharminder won the title in the Greeco-Roman (+96 kg), defeating Amit on points.

Meanwhile, the Chandigarh Wrestling Association will select grapplers during trials on May 23 at the same venue.

The grapplers thus selected will represent Chandigarh in the Sub-Junior and Junior National Wrestling Championship to be held at Anandpur Sahib from May 25 to 27.

Harleen enters third round

Harleen made her way to the third round after beating Drishti Sharma 17-15 in the girls’ singles (sub-junior) category while Hassan move ahead in the boys’ group under the same category beating Anshul Dhaliwal 25-0 in the 10th St Stephen’s Carrom Ranking Tournament.

The tournament is being held at St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, here.

Ball Badminton GMHS-36 lift trophy

Chandigarh, May 20
Government Model High School, Sector 36, lifted trophy beating Manav Mangal, Sector 21, in the fourth Sub-Junior Ball Badminton Championship which concluded at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 32, today. Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 37, emerged winner in the girls final thrashing Government High School, Sector 32. Chief guest Baljeet Singh Chadda gave away the prizes.

Results: Boys (final): GMHS-36 b Manav Mangal High School, 21 29-18, 29-22; third place: GHPS-40 b Manav Mangal High School, 29-12, 29-22.
