Drowned: Ravinder Kumar of Dharmuwala village in Sriganganagar district reportedly drowned while taking a bath in a canal near Dangarkhera village on the Abohar-Fazilka road on Tuesday evening. He was a student of Industrial Training Institute, Fazilka, and had come to spend a day with his friend Rajkaran Singh Burjmuhar.
Suicide: Naresh Kumar, 31, a daily wager, allegedly committed suicide by consuming an insecticide at his house in Gopal Nagari here on Tuesday. His wife and four children had left for Bihar last week due to strained relations, family sources said.
Arrested: The local wing of the CIA staff has arrested Amarjit Singh of Mahalpur in Hoshiarpur for smuggling 30 kg poppy husk from Rajasthan. In another case, Bohad Singh of Government Seed Farm Colony was also arrested under the NDPS Act for possessing 5 gm smack.
Elected: Iqbal Singh Sandhu of DAV College here has been elected finance secretary of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers’ Union. He defeated J.R. Prashar of Ferozepore by 28 votes in the elections for the state body.

Postponed: The SPARSH theatre society has decided to postpone a street play, “Swami Dot Com,” due to uneasy calm prevailing in the region following the Dera Sacha Sauda controversy. The play was scheduled for May 25. The next date will be announced after the peace is restored, a spokesman of the society said on Wednesday.
Prayer meeting: The Shanti Mission of India on Wednesday decided to organise a prayer meeting at Guru Nanak durbar here on May 24 to diffuse the tension over the dera feud. President of the mission Baba Surjit Singh Bedi and retired SDM B.L.Sikka and patron of the NGO said all social, religious organisations and administration had been requested to join the morning prayer on Thursday.
Yoga camp: Five-day yoga camps organised by Shanti Kunj, Hardwar, concluded at A One Public School and Government High School at Bazidpur Kattianwali village, near here, on Tuesday. Pragya Devi from Dev Sanskriti Vishavvidyalya and regional convener Hira Lal Chauhan urged the students to begin their day with yoga.
Sangat darshan: Eighteen out of the 36 complaints were disposed of at a sangat darshan being organised at the local CPRC office on Wednesday. Additional deputy commissioner Inder Yash Bhatti said the remaining complaints had been sent to respective departments for speedy disposal.
Man ‘murders’ brother: A resident of village Daduwal here brutally murdered his younger brother over a property dispute. According to the police, Lahmber Singh alongwith his sons Balbir Singh and Raghubir Singh, murdered his younger brother Dilawar Singh with sharp-edged weapons. After committing the crime, Lahmber surrendered in the Mahilpur Police Station on Wednesday morning. A case has been registered. The deceased is survived by two children. His wife had deserted him and married another person sometime ago.
Award function at Cambridge: Cambridge International School for girls organised its second award function on May 20. Ajeet Singh Pannu, deputy commissioner, was the chief guest. Students were awarded in academic, art, music, dance, theater, sports, cultural and special achievements. DC Pannu emphasised on the need for quality education and how schools have to take on larger roles than preparing students just for board results. Issues of not only national but international concern are to be thought on and participated in. Accident: A youth, Gurdeep Singh of Bhudan village, was killed in a road accident at Himtana Lacha Baddi village, near here, on Tuesday. Gurdeep was going to his village on a motor cycle when a school bus hit him. He was admitted to the Civil Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Man falls to death from train: An unidentified man died after falling off from a running train near the Khajurla village railway crossing on Tuesday night, official sources said. According to the information received, a man wearing black jeans and a blue T-shirt, fell off from Jammu-bound Madras Mail at around 10 pm. GRP personnel took him to the local Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him as brought dead.
