Patients told about dental ailments at camp

Ludhiana, May 24
A free dental check up camp was organised by Baba Jaswant Singh Dental College and Hospital at Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha in New Moti Nagar here today.

Large number of locals, which included students of a primary school located in the area, attended the camp. The checkups were conducted by a team of senior dental surgeons, headed by professor and head of the hospital’s Department of Community Dentistry Dr Pawan Arora and Dr Ashish Kumar. Dr Hardeep Singh and Dr Jyoti B. Dass coordinated the camp activities.

The camp began with a talk and slide show about dietary habits, lack of oral hygiene, lack of regular dental checkups and how these lead to some common dental ailments.

The dental experts stressed the need for timely orthodontic treatment of girls in their childhood or adolescence which, they said, is mostly neglected.

Those attending the camp were also educated about the right brushing technique apart from being told about oral cancer and its spread through the use of tobacco products.

Those who attended the camp were given ‘patient cards’ which informed them about their oral health. Patients were also give free medicines at the camp.



All set for pulse polio round

Samrala, May 24
Dr Harvinder Singh, senior medical officer, Civil Hospital, Samrala, has said that volunteers are ready for the pulse polio round on May 27.

The SMO said that for a target of 3,347 children, 16 posts have been established in Samrala, besides seven transit posts for children travelling in buses and one mobile team for slums. Fortyeight volunteers from the health department, ayurvedic department, homeopathic department and ITI Samrala will also take part in the programme.

Three supervisors will also be present on the occasion.



Ultrasound centres warned against sex test

Sounding a note of warning to ultrasound centres in the city against carrying out foetal sex determination test and female foeticide in violation of the PNDT Act, the civil surgeon, Dr S.P. Sharma, today said even though the department had no intention of causing unnecessary harassment to the sonologists, those found defying the Act would not be spared.

Addressing a meeting of the Ludhiana Radiology Association on the implementation of the PNDT Act here, he stressed upon the owners of scan centres to scrupulously follow the Act.

Dr K.S. Soin, who presided over the meeting, along with the general secretary of the association, Dr Gurdeep Singh, assured the health administration of full support by the radiologists in the efforts to curb the menace of female foeticide.



Bharat to lead Ludhiana cricket team

Ludhiana, May 24
Bharat Malhotra, student of Kundan Vidya Mandir School, Civil Lines, has been named captain of the Ludhiana cricket team (u-19) for the Punjab State Inter-District Cricket Tournament for Dhruv Pandove Trophy to be organised by the Punjab Cricket Association.

The Ludhiana District Cricket Association conducted trials on May 22 to select the probables for this tournament in which 54 boys turned up. The selection panel comprising Chaman Lal Malhotra, Sham Lal, Naresh Marwaha, Pawan Pandey and Rajesh Diwan supervised the aspirants and finalised a list of 19 probables.

Ludhiana will take on Chandigarh in the inaugural match to be played here at the Satish Chander Dhawan Government College for Boys ground on May 25 and 26.

Ludhiana team comprises Bharat Malhotra, Sakun Jindal, Munish Sawal, Akhil Aggarwal, Lalit Malhotra, Sanchit Gosain, Geetansh Khera, Varun Chitkara, Deepak Bansal, Jashan Sidhu, Rahul Singla, Gurinder Singh, Atul Kohli, Navjot Khurana, Prabhkaran Singh, Tarun Bawa, Jayant Batra, Nakul Sharma and Sumit Bhalla.

Manmohan Bedi has been appointed manager-cum-coach of the team.
