Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 25
Twenty volunteers from the Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP), Asia Centre, today assembled on the CYP campus in Sector 12 to pay homage to those who have succumbed to the HIV virus. Candles in hand and talking hope, the volunteers, headed by regional director R.K. Mishra, took out a march as a mark of reverence to departed souls.

The occasion was meant to observe the Global AIDS Week of Action celebrated every year between May 20 and 26. Started last year, the week attracted participation from 30 countries. This time, there has been a more heartening participation, with more and more volunteers joining the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Mishra said the volunteers lit lamps for the millions affected or infected with the HIV virus across the world. Also present was Hasan Shifu, programme manager, who said every little thing an individual does to fight against AIDS matters.

Gaurav Gaur, one of the commonwealth youth ambassadors engaged in HIV/AIDS prevention at Chandigarh, spoke for all. “We must spread the message of HIV/AIDS awareness faster than the virus,” he said.
