At last, the Shiromani Akali Dal seems to be trying to wrest the initiative from the radicals by organising special peace meets at various local gurdwaras. Since most of the local gurdwaras are managed and controlled by the SAD only.

SAD leaders red-faced
Dhillon kin made plant chief with Cong backing

Mandi Ahmedgarh, May 27
Senior SAD leaders of Kilaraipur and Payal assembly constituencies of the district were shocked when Ajmer Singh Dhillon, a brother of party MP and Youth Wing president Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, managed to garner the support of the Congress directors to get elected as chairman of the Milk Plant, Ludhiana.

Malerkotla: Too few govt officials here
Mandi Ahmedgarh, May 27
Notwithstanding the emotionally charged atmosphere due to ongoing conflict between Sikh organisations and Sacha Sauda sect, the Punjab government failed to fill up posts of officers who were supposed to coordinate with the police in maintaining law and order.


The fear of peace being sacrificed in the confrontation between Dera Sacha Sauda and Akal Takht notwithstanding, the people in the state in general and those in Ludhiana showed exceptional resolve and restraint

March staged to spread message of peace

Activists of the Association for Democratic Rights (AFDR) staged a peace march urging the people to maintain harmony and peace in the state in wake of the Sacha Sauda controversy. Carrying placards and flags the activists marched from Punjabi Bhawan to Jagraon bridge.

Glowing tributes were paid to country’s first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru on his 44th death anniversary here today.

Trusts asked to seek registration for IT exemption

"Registration under Section 12A of the Income Tax Act, 1961, is a precondition for availing exemption of income under Sections 11 and 12 of the Act by a charitable or religious trust or institution. For obtaining such registration, the trust or institution has to make an application in Form No.10-A to the commissioner of income tax within one year from the date of its creation or establishment."

Poor performance by Machhiwara schools

Poor performance of a number of schools in Middle standard exam in the Machhiwara area has become cause of worry for the educationists of the area. A look at the result gazette shows that only one dozen schools have crossed the pass percentage more than 50. Rest of schools could not succeed to get pass percentage of even 50 per cent.

The results of class XII science and commerce stream of Sant Kirpal Singh Public School, Neelon, 10 km from here, are remarkable, according to Bakshi, director of the school. Ravneet Kaur of non-medical stream got 90 per cent marks and Pulk Bhatia of commerce got 84.6 per cent. Both stood first. — OC

While various political parties leaders were busy in harvesting political mileage from the ongoing conflict between activists of Sikh organisations and the Dera Sacha Sauda, M.S. Khan, a young singer, has called upon leaders of various social and religious organisations to join hands in preserving peace and tranquility in the region.

More than 3 lakh kids administered polio drops
Ludhiana, May 27
The Health Department claimed to have vaccinated more than 3 lakh children below five years of age in the district today. The children, from the total of around 5.51 lakh eligible kids, who did not get the drops today will be given polio drops during door-to-door visits by field staff and volunteers on Monday and Tuesday.

Over 1500 patients examined at health camps
Ludhiana, May 27
Nearly 300 patients were examined for eye ailments at a free eye check-up camp organised by the Maa Bhagwati Club at Gurdwara Deep Nagar here today. A team of doctors led by Dr Ramesh Mansooranwale conducted the examination of patients and rendered follow-up advice. Ten patients were selected for corrective eye surgery to be performed free of cost.

Punjab eves overcome spirited Goa girls

Defending champions, Punjab, in the girls section began their campaign on a winning note in the 25th Junior National Softball Championship that started at the Punjab Agricultural University campus ground here today.
