Making the best of holidays
NET-qualified youth pay for no fault of theirs

Extra-curricular activities during vacations are fun and help to widen a child’s horizon, says Kanwalpreet Summer vacations—40 days off from school—a time of fun and frolic. This is the time of the year which students wait for and some parents dread. With lots of time on children’s hands, parents are at a loss as to how to keep their otherwise busy children constructively engaged. Television and cartoons seemed to be the only answer a few years ago. They have become more attractive, with children’s channels offering goodies specially designed for holidays. A majority of parents refuse to take this option, and so, the alternative is summer camps. Parents have considered this option not only to keep their children busy in holidays, but also because children do not get time for extra-curricular activities once school reopens. While studies are essential for the career path, extra-curricular activities spice up their lives. With parents now open to their children choosing innovative careers, these activities can help one build an interesting and lucrative career. Radio jockeys, call centre executives and event managers must have the gift of the gab. Hobbies like art and craft, which can take one far in life, are brushed up during holidays. Manjeet and Judy Thomas, in charge of extra-curricular activities at Saint Stephen’s School, Chandigarh, say extra-curricular activities nurture the soul. Manjeet says summer camps help children tap their potential in extra-curricular activities, which become stress-free activities in holidays. Cheema of the same school adds that the advantage of summer camps is that children get time to research topics and bring forth new facts. Inderjeet Kaur Arora, officiating principal of Khalsa Girls High School, Civil Lines, Ludhiana, says these camps do not allow a child to become a couch potato during holidays. These are a boon to parents as well as children. With the break-up of joint families and with both parents working, children need these camps. Children need to develop the maximum skills in this competitive world. The duration of the camp should be kept in mind so that the child does not dread it, she adds. Shivani Arora, coordinator of a summer camp at Children’s Valley School, Green Park, Ludhiana, says these camps help children relax and do what they like. Summer camps let children experiment. There is no pressure on them and they are more attentive and receptive. They are not exhausted and are able to enjoy these activities. They discover their interests and the activities that help them relax. According to Madhu, coordinator of a summer camp in Alpine International School, Ludhiana, these camps help children make new friends and work in a new environment. For one full month, children are encouraged to think and put forth new ideas. There is no fear of being ridiculed for indulging in any activity. Parents are happy that their children are evolving and showing interest in activities that develop their personalities. These activities provide succour to famished souls of creative children. These activities are often quoted as ways of relaxation by achievers and toppers in different fields. So why not encourage children to indulge in activities that offer a constructive way to release pent-up emotions? Three cheers for the child brigade, all charged up for the holidays! Enjoy each moment and gear up for the year ahead. But keep the flame of learning new things that you enjoy burning in your hearts. |

NET-qualified youth pay for no fault of theirs The ongoing tussle over the nomenclature of degree programmes between the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the administrations of numerous universities has left many a NET-qualified youth high and dry. These youth had cleared their National Eligibility Test (NET) for lecturership conducted by the UGC during the past two or three years. However, they have not got their NET certificates till date. The reason being cited for the non-issuance of NET certificates is that the UGC wants the universities to change the names of certain degree programmes for the sake of uniformity. For instance, the UGC wants the Master of Mass Communication course renamed as MA (Mass Communication) and the Master of Business Economics course as MBA (Business Economics). On the other hand, the authorities of the universities are reluctant to change the names of their established degree programmes, which have been running on for several years. The pity of the situation is that NET-qualified candidates are being made to suffer due to non-compliance of UGC directions by the universities. The UGC had recently shot off letters to the candidates affected, stating that their degrees were not UGC-specified as per the UGC notification in this regard. The letter further states that the matter relating to the issuance of NET certificate/JRF award letter to the candidates, who have obtained their masters degree in a course not specified by the UGC, is under the active consideration of the UGC and they will be intimated when the matter is settled. On clearing the NET, one becomes eligible for the post of lecturer anywhere in the country. Hence, whenever there is a vacancy for the post of lecturer in some college or university, these youth apply for the same as they fulfil the eligibility criteria. However, at the time of interview, they are told to produce their NET certificates, as witnessed during the interviews for the posts of lecturer at Kurukshetra University recently. The hapless candidates approach the UGC authorities, but to no avail. Thanks to this high-handedness of the authorities concerned, the career of NET-qualified lecturership aspirants is at stake. The candidates affected are also suffering mental harassment and humiliation for no fault of theirs. And all this, despite the fact that the UGC has no objection on the course content and has allowed the candidates to appear in the NET and declared them passed. Their names appeared in the list of successful candidates in the Employment News as well as on the Internet. Nonetheless, the youth, who have become victims of the UGC-varsities tussle, do not know which door to knock at. |
