Jerusalem, June 3
Ten Indian peacekeepers with the United Nations have been honoured for saving lives of injured Belgian soldiers in Lebanon.
They were conferred the 'Medal of Merit of the King of Belgium.'
On March 17 this year, the peacekeepers of 15 Punjab Infantry battalion, who have been awarded, were involved in a heroic evacuation of four crew members of an armoured personnel carrier of the Belgian force who met with an accident near Kafer Chauba in Lebanon, where the Indian contingent operates.
Naib Subedar Amrik Singh, the first one to reach the site of the accident, organised the speedy evacuation of the grievously injured peacekeepers.
He informed the Commanding Officer of the battalion, Col Advitya Madan, about the accident who then ensured the speedy air evacuation of the injured. The medical staff then ensured proper
medical care to the Belgian peacekeepers. Senior Medical Officer Maj Y.V.B. Rao, Dental Officer Maj Daljinder Singh and Medical Officer Maj Madhulima Saha were among the 10 award winners.
Praising Amrik Singh’s efforts, Commanding Officer of the Belgian Battalion, Col Hendrick Van Sluijs, said, “he displayed cool headed commitment and galvanised the men under his command to react swiftly.” said.
