Abohar
Aid for  student: The teachers, participating in a seminar at Government Model High School here on Saturday, collected Rs 5,000 to pay the fee of a student of a private college of education. The family of the student was unable to pay his fee as it has spent a lot of money on the treatment of his ailing mother. After the teachers talked to the college authorities, they agreed to give some concession in the fee. The Social Welfare Society contributed Rs 4,000.

Ludhiana
Book RELEASED: A commemorative volume of writer Kewal Dheer’s works, ‘Golden Harvest’, was released on Sunday. Dheer has written 67 books and 25 TV serials. He has won 35 national and international awards. Born on October 5, 1938, Dheer’s first book, ‘Dharti Ro Pari’, was published in 1957. He is also a popular radio voice.

Paper presented: Dr G S Dhami of the Dhami Eye Care Hospital, Ludhiana, recently presented his paper 'Intra-Ocular lens implantation in eyes with no Capsular Support' at the annual congress of American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) held at California, USA. The congress was meant to provide information about the new methods for cataract removal and refractive surgery.

Mandi Ahmedgarh
School director: Secretary of the Shanti Tara Educational and Medical Trust, Arvind Malhotra, said Amarjit Singh Sidhu had joined as director of Shanti Tara College and Public School. Earlier, Sidhu was serving as director of the Guru Harkrishan College.

Nakodar
Two arrested with smack
: The police arrested two persons, including a woman, for illegally possessing smack at two different nakas in Nakodar villages on Saturday. Baldev Singh, a resident of Muddha village, was arrested and seven grams of smack was recovered from his possession. The police also seized eight grams of smack from Kaushalya, a resident of Shankar village. Cases under the NDPS Act have been registered against both the accused.

Phillaur
FIRs against travel agents: The police has registered a case against travel agent Mohan Singh, his wife Kuldip Kaur and son Davinder of Littran village on the charge of cheating Talwan resident Baldev Raj who had given them Rs 9.5 lakh for sending him to Canada. The police has also registered a case against travel agent Parveen of Dheena village for cheating Vijay Kumar of Boparaikalan who had given the agent Rs 3 lakh to send him to England. Both accused have absconded.

SANGRUR
Awareness camp
: The Koshish Welfare Club on Sunday launched a five-day camp to create awareness about small savings in slum areas of Indira Basti at Sunam. President of the club Rakesh Aggarwal said twentyfive forms were filled by slum dwellers at the camp for opening of recurring deposits (RD) accounts in the post offices.

Tarn Taran
4 booked for molesting woman
: Four persons of Sarhali Khurd village have been booked for molesting a married woman of the village. A case has been registered against the accused, identified as Gurmej Singh, Satnam Singh, Mukha Singh and Amarjit Singh, under Sections 354, 447, 511, 427, 34 of the IPC. The accused forcibly entered the house of the woman and molested and torn her clothes. Satnam and Amarjit have been arrested, the rest  are absconding.

Group clash: Police books 21: As many as 21 persons have been booked by the city police in connection with a group clash that took place here on June 1. Among those booked include Taresmpreet Singh, a municipal councillor of the ruling Akali Dal and an advocate belonging to the Communist Party of India (CPI). According to the report, the clash occurred over possession of a plot. Besides the leaders of both the groups, more than four persons received serious injuries in the incident. A case under section 395,452,379, 427, 506, 323,148, 149 IPC has been registered. No arrest s have been made till  now.

CHAMBA
7 LPG cylinders stolen
: Thieves on Friday night broke open the window of a store and took away with them seven LPG cylinders. The robbery came to light when the in charge of the store came to his office the next morning. Seven LPG cooking cylinders have been reported missing from the store. A case has been registered and the police has launched a manhunt to nab the thieves.

Office-bearers: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Bar Association, Kullu: president- Sudhir Bhatnagar; senior vice-president Gopal Sharma; vice-president- Nain Prakash; general secretary- Yash Pal and treasurer- Deepak Thakur.

NAHAN
Action against docs sought: In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, president of the Nahan Nagrik Sabha Digvijay Gupta has demanded action against in charge of Nahan district hospital and doctors who were allegedly found absent from duty on the night of May 31. He said if no action was taken against the caretaker CMO and doctors concerned in seven days, an agitation would be launched.
