Developer sentenced for illegal land sale
Chandigarh, June 4
Arun Kumar, Judicial Magistrate (1st Class), Ropar, has sentenced a developer from Kurali to simple imprisonment for one year and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on him for violating the Punjab Apartment and Property Regulation Act.

10-yr RI for 3 in poppy husk case
Chandigarh, June 4
A local court today sentenced three persons to 10-year rigorous imprisonment each and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh each in a case under the NDPS Act. The accused are already in judicial custody since July 2005.

Abandoned baby’s mother shows up
Chandigarh, June 4
Five days after an unidentified man abandoned a six-month-old girl in the Sector 23 Missionaries of Charity, a young woman from Patiala, claiming to be the mother of the girl, visited the orphanage today.

2 commit suicide
Chandigarh, June 4
A Sector 52 resident allegedly hanged himself to death at his residence in the rehabilitated colony here today. He was in his mid-forties. He left a suicide note, which was addressed to his children, saying “he was helpless”, said the police.

Racket involving evasion of VAT unearthed
Rajpura, June 4
The Punjab excise and taxation department has unearthed a major racket by three electronic companies involving alleged evasion of value added tax on the sale of inverters and uninterrupted power suppliers in the state. The racket was detected at the information collection centre on the Punjab-Haryana border in Shambu, near here, recently.

Fire-hit pick up the pieces

Devastated by the fire, people in Colony No. 5 have started re-building their dwellings. The flames that destroyed almost everything in more than 60 shacks also brought people together as help for the affected poured in from neighbours.

The elections to the uttar railway mazdoor union will be held in Delhi on June 25, the registrar, trade unions, announced today.
The Supreme Court had appointed the registrar, trade unions, Delhi, as administrator to resolve the union dispute and hold the elections.

4 snatching incidents reported
Chandigarh, June 4
In a spate of snatching incidents in the city, four cases of miscreants escaping with valuables of gullible targets were reported from various parts of the city today. This, even as the police had set up anti-snatching nakas across the city.

Chemist shop owner robbed
Chandigarh, June 4
Two persons robbed a chemist shop owner in the Mauli Jagran area here today.
The shop owner, Avtar Singh, alleged the two robbers came to his shop posing as salesmen selling some cleaning powder.

Two vehicles stolen
Chandigarh, June 4
Two vehicles were reportedly stolen from the city during the past 48 hours. Vinod Kumar Khanna of Sector 15-D reported to the police that his Maruti car (CHF-0649) was stolen from his residence during the intervening night of June 2 and 3.

They are supposed to slug it out for the Union of India in the Punjab and Haryana High Court but they are at war with each other over “unfair distribution of work”. The row between the Additional Solicitor-General of India, Centre’s seniormost counsel here, and a fellow Central government’s counsel has assumed alarming proportions.

Fire: Lawyers move NHRC
Mohali, June 4
Three lawyers of a human rights organisation have filed a public interest litigation with the National Human Rights Commission against certain Punjab ministers , deputy commissioners and SSPs of all districts and fire officers in Punjab alleging that they were playing with the lives of the people by not providing proper fire fighting system in the state.
