: An Army recruitment rally will be held from July 1 to 14 at Rayya (Beas) for the recruitment of soldiers (general duty), Sikhs, Sikh (M and R), AIAC, Dogra, Muslim, Brahmin, Gorkha (Magar and Guring of Gurdaspur district only), soldier clerk (all castes) and soldier technical (Sikh and Sikh M and R). Tokens will be issued to candidates from Amritsar and Tarn Taran districts on July 11.

: Sukhdev Singh (41) who had reportedly been sentenced to life imprisonment for killing younger brother Kulwant Singh in a land dispute in 1992 and had not reported back to the jail authorities even after completing the period of parole on Tuesday committed suicide by consuming insecticide, family sources confirmed on Wednesday. His body was found in a deserted corner of the field at Jhurarkhera village.

Dharna: Members of the Class IV Government Employees Union staged a dharna in the canal complex here on the sixth day of the agitation against the "illegal" transfer of Harji Ram. Representatives from Malout, Muktsar, Gidderbaha and Lambi joined the local employees in shouting slogans against the executive engineer and superintending engineer of the department for their "autocratic and biased" attitude.

4 arrested: The police on Wednesday arrested four persons under Sections 21,61and 85, NDPS Act, during searches near Dutaranwali village and Khubban and recovered 19 gm smack from them. An Indica car (PB 15 B 5925) used by them was also impounded.

Jeewan Kumar, a Maur Mandi-based chemist shop owner, was arrested by the police after intoxicant syrups, tablets and capsules were recovered from him near Ram Nagar crossings here on Wednesday. Nau Nihal Singh, SSP, in a press note said a case had been registered .

Two fake travel agents booked:
Fake travel agents have duped a resident of Kotli Jand of Rs 5.07 lakh in the name of sending him to Italy. The Tanda police has booked Harbilas Singh of Dehriwal village and Manjit Singh of Dhabri crossing, Delhi, under sections 406 and 420 of the IPC and section 10 of the Immigration Act, 1983. According to the police sources, Gurwinder Kaur, wife of Jaspal Singh of Kotli Jand, alleged that the travel agents took Rs 5.07 for sending her husband to Italy. But instead of sending him to Italy, they sent him to France, where he was arrested by the police.

Withdraw fee hike
: Student body: DIET Students Welfare Association in a memorandum to Sadhu Singh, new director of SCERT have demanded withdrawal of hiked fees by ETT colleges. In a memorandum to the director the association has demanded that discrepancies in the recently declared results be removed, issuance of detailed marks card to students, commence re-evaluation, conduct compartment exams at the earliest and provide migration facility to students so that they can study near their homes. Sadhu Singh assured support to their demands.

Safai camp
: A social organisation, Sahara Welfare Club, Khamano, organised a three-day safai camp from June 17 to 19 in front of Senior Secondary School, Khamano. Club members removed grass from both the sides in front of school and also cut branches hanging dangerously from nearby trees. They also cleaned the divider, whitewashed some trees and put the whitewash in the roots of some trees.

Constable held
: Jaswinder Singh, a constable of the Punjab Police, was arrested by a police party led by SI Kashmir Singh for his alleged involvement in the smuggling of narcotics.Ram Singh, SSP, in a press note issued here on Wednesday, said about 8 kg of poppy husk was recovered from the accused. He said Jaswinder was already under suspension and posted in the Police Lines.A case had been registered.

Case registered
: The Bhagtapurana police station has claimed to have apprehended two accused, including a woman, with narcotics in two separate incidents in the past 24 hours here.A resident of Shoppianwali village in Muktsar district, Kartar Kaur, was arrested with 500 gm opium at Bagha Purana bus stand. In another case, Balwinder Singh of Gholia Kurd village was held with 140 kg poppy husk from his residence.

Woman arrested with smack
: The CIA staff today arrested Sarabjit Kaur, a resident of Lakhpur village and recovered 15 gram smack from her, according to Jagtar Singh Kainth, SP(HQ) cum nodal officer in a statement here today. He said 2 kg poppy husk was also recovered from Surinder Kumar, alias Shinda, of Herian village.

One killed, five injured in accident
: One person was killed and five others, including a woman were injured, when the car in which they were travelling from Jalandhar to Ludhiana dashed against a tree near Saprod village on the National Highway here this afternoon. Tejwinder Singh, who was driving the car died on way to the hospital while Harvinderpal Singh, Davinderpal Singh, Kulbir Singh, Kamaljit Singh and Harbhajan Kaur, all residents of Ludhiana were injured in the accident. The condition of Kulbir Singh and Harvinderpal Singh is stated to be critical. The injured were admitted to local Civil Hospital.

Wife files FIR
: Rekha of Khedi village in the Gehadwin reserve constituency has filed an FIR against husband Rajesh Kumar and other in-laws alleging maltreatment, beating and torture for more dowry. Rekha, who was married to Rajesh Kumar over one-and-a-half years ago, alleged that her in-laws were demanding Rs 50,000 in cash from her parents. She said her poor parents could not meet repeated demands of her in-laws.

10-year RI
: In less than four months of the beginning of trial, a fast-track court of the Additional Session judge D. S. Khenal on Wednesday convicted Renu Guggar, a Nepalese woman in a case of NDPS Act for carrying 8 Kg charas. The accused was sentenced for 10-years rigorous imprisonment and was directed to pay Rupees 1 lakh fine.

Muth rebuilding
: Restoration work of 800-year-old Baba Itwari Nath Muth has begun at Thod Niwad village under Rajgarh subdivision. Rajgarh SDM and chairman of muth rejuvenation committee Vivek Chandel said here on Wednesday that Rs 15 lakh would be spent on the work. He said the demolition work was started around a month ago. Thousands of devotees participated in the shramdaan, he added.
