Chandigarh, June 23
The Northwest region is about to experience the first spell of pre-monsoon showers this season. Conditions are also favourable for the advancement of monsoon over the region.

Fresh forecast shows that the weather systems are now moving from east to west, indicating the gradual approach of monsoon and setting the stage for pre-monsoon rains. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Delhi, says that pre-monsoons are likely to hit the region tonight or latest by tomorrow. Rains witnessed in the Northwest until now have not had pre-monsoon characteristics, as they have been caused by winds coming from Pakistan.

For us, to term weather developments as pre-monsoon, winds and rains must blow from east to west and not west to east, as the case has been in the Northwest over the past week and before. Only now, we have started spotting east to westward movement of winds. Rains induced by such winds are essentially pre-monsoon in nature. The Northwest may well wake up to such showers tomorrow morning, said weather experts at the RMC, Delhi.

A low pressure area will have formed over the Bay of Bengal by June 27. Around this time, the monsoon trough will also have assumed its normal position. Subsequently, it will start moving northwestwards. Conditions are ripe for the advancement of monsoons over the Northwest, which will experience isolated rains and thundershowers till the final arrival, said director, RMC, SC Bhan.
