Blasts a way of life for them

Jasmar, a resident of Bhood village, was 10 years old when he tossed a pebble on a shell lying in the field. The explosion cost him his eye, an arm and two toes. Today, at 35 years, he can recall the nightmare that followed the blast as he lay in a pool of blood, screaming for help.

MC mulls revision of conversion charges

The municipal corporation at its house meeting on Thursday will consider to refix the conversion charges for floors of residential buildings used for commercial use in Mani Majra, Attawa, Badheri, Burail and Buterala on per square yard basis for the covered area.

80 jhuggis removed

The enforcement staff of the estate office today carried out a demolition drive in Industrial Area, Phase 1, here to remove encroachments at press sites here. Around 800 jhuggis were removed in the day-long drive.

2 arrested for robbery

The local police claimed to have arrested two persons within hours after they allegedly robbed a man of his belongings from Sector 17 late on Tuesday night.

A CBI inspector, Subhash Kundu, and a constable posted with the UT police and on with deputation the CBI, Chandigarh, Mahinder Singh, were yesterday booked on charges of allegedly repeatedly raping a Hisar resident.No arrests have been made so far.

The local police today registered a case under the narcotics Act against sub-inspector Ved Parkash in connection with the recovery of smack from his  possession.

Class XI Admissions
Last date extended

The UT education department has extended the last date for the submission of forms for the centralised class XI admissions by one more day.  The earlier date was July 28 but now the forms will also be accepted on July 29.

181 teachers transferred

The education department has transferred as many as 181 teachers apart from principals and lecturers today. The teachers will join their new school after the summer vacation on July 2.

PEC alumni against name change

Punjab Engineering College (deemed university) wants a new name for itself but its alumni doesn’t. The PEC authorities have proposed to change the name of the deemed university from ‘Punjab Engineering College’ to ‘Punjab Engineering College University’ but majority of its alumni have, in response to a survey, said no change of name was needed.

Theatre workshop ends

A month-long annual production-oriented workshop in theatrical arts and various crafts, conducted by the Pracheen Kala Kendra, ended today at the Indira Holiday Home auditorium. As many as 46 students in between four and 16 years of age participated in the workshop.

Roll Nos dispatched
Panjab University has dispatched roll numbers to all candidates who are eligible to take the entrance test-2007 for admission to a five-year integrated BA LLB (honours) course and three-year professional LLB course at Swami Sarvanand Giri, Panjab University Regional Centre, Bajwara, Hoshiarpur. The test will be conducted on July 1.

Mills told to add folic acid to flour

Roller flour mills and atta chakis in the city have been asked to install equipment to add folic acid and iron to the flour sold in the city. The mandatory orders are likely to be implemented from August.

Targeting an additional income of around Rs 75 lakh per annum from sale of wheat, the UT Agricultural Marketing Board is planning to impose market fee on the commodity.
