1 killed: A medicine company representative (MR) was killed in a road mishap on Friday night. Vijay Kumar (32) of Jaswant Nagar had gone to supply medicines to a dealer at 7.30 p.m. on Abohar-Hanumangarh road on his motorcycle when an unidentified vehicle hit him and fled. He was rushed to the civil hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Father kills daughter: A man, who had deserted his wife a few months back, allegedly beat his six-year-old daughter to death in the Kesarisinghpur area of Sriganganagar on Friday, the police said on Saturday. According to the elder sister of the victim, her father, Thanwer Dass, who was drunk, entered the house and for no reason started beating the child which led to her death. He fled after committing the crime. The police has registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC.

Elected: The governing council of Khalsa College, Amritsar, at its meeting held here on Saturday, unanimously elected Rajmohinder Singh Majithia as chancellor, Dharambir Singh Jolly as rector and Satyajit Singh Majithia as president. The new president nominated Charanjit Singh Chadha as vice-president and Mohan Singh Chhina as honorary secretary.

Plantation drive: SGPC chief Avtar Singh has sent a circular to managers of Sikh shrines to plant trees inside the gurudwara complexes With monsoon round the corner, the saplings planted these days would grow fast, said the circular.

Meeting held: Taking a serious view of the demonstration by SAD (B) workers of Tanda circle, under the leadership of their circle president Makhan Singh Meerapur, against district president Thakedar Surinder Singh Bhulewal Rathan in front of the district office of the party here on Thursday, senior leaders of the SAD (B), including Joginder Singh Narial, president, Sikh Welfare Society, Ajwinder Singh, senior vice-president of the youth wing, Avtar Singh Johal, Jawinder Singh Parmar and Jorawar Singh, convened a meeting of the prominent activists here on Friday.

Man molests 5-yr-old, booked
: The district police has today registered a case against Jinder (42), a resident of village Ratenda, for allegedly molesting his 5-year-old girl neighbour. The victim was alone at the time of incident. The matter came to light when the victim told her grandmother about the incident. The accused, who is still at large, is father of four children including two daughters.

Flood control: In the wake of 42 villages in Phillaur sub-division being identified as sensitive to floods, Phillaur SDM Pritam Singh announced on Saturday evening, that the flood control centre would start functioning round-the-clock in Phillaur as well as in 13 villages from July 1. He said officials of the drainage department had been directed to inspect all possible breaches in Dhusi Bandh and make necessary arrangements for strengthening it.



Thief arrested
: The Ghumarwin police arrested Ravinder Kumar of Baloh village, near Ghumarwin, for stealing the purse of woman passenger Suneeta Devi of Kotla village. Sunita left her luggage and purse on the bus seat and got down to talk to a relative at Ghumarwin bus stand when Ravinder Kumar grabbed her purse and ran away. When Sunita raised an alarm, two policemen Ravinder Kumar and Kartar Singh on patrol duty ran after the thief and caught him at Gandhi Chowk. The purse contained a cash amount of Rs 336.

Elected: The following have been elected as office-bearers of the CRI Employees Association for 2007- 2009. President - Naresh Kumar Attri; Vice- president - Babu Ram; secretary - Pradeep Nithani; joint secretary - Vijay Kumar; Cashier - Brij Lal Verma. The elections were held on June 27.

30 hurt in mishap: At least 30 persons were injured when a bus rolled down into a khud at Parwanoo in Solan district on Friday. The bus collided head-on with a truck and rolled down a 60-ft khud at Parwanoo, police said. The bus was on its way to Shimla from Chandigarh. The injured have been admitted to the Government Hospital, Parwanoo, while the three seriously injured, including the driver have been sent to Chandigarh.
