Three arrested
: The police has arrested three members of a gang of vehicle lifters, while three others are absconding. SSP R.N. Dhoke said Gurmeet Singh,Lakhwinder Singh and Rajesh Kumar have been arrested.

RTI Act: To spread awareness about the Right to Information Act and ensure its implementation at all levels, training programmes will be held and RTI counters opened at all district headquarters, revealed Rajan Kashyap, state information commissioner, while talking to mediapersons here on Monday. He said for this purpose an amount of Rs 40 lakh had been received from UNO.

New scheme: To provide relief to farmers, Punjab National Bank opened a counselling counter here on Monday.Under the new scheme, the farmers will be able to get easy loan from the bank.Gurdaspur DC Vivek Pratap Singh inaugurated the scheme at a function here on Monday.

Woman sets herself ablaze
: Local police has booked 11 people for allegedly forcing a woman to make a suicide bid on Sunday night. The woman, Jasbir Kaur, alleged that eight persons, identified as Inder, Jodha, Bikar, Ummi, Suman, Kiran, Jeeto and Baksho came to her house on July 7 and beat her up. Kaur said her in-laws did not support her and used foul language against her. Out of frustration, she set herself ablaze. The woman was rescued by the villagers after hearing her cries.

Girl crushed: A 13-year-old girl was crushed to death by a speeding truck on Monday morning while she was on her way to school on her bicycle. The victim has been identified as Deepa Rani of Bahad village.

Woman duped: A Tanda woman was duped of Rs 11 lakh by fake travel agents on the pretext of sending her son abroad. In her complaint, Daljit Kaur alleged that Balbir Kaur and Sukhwinder Singh of Khanpur took Rs 11, 08,800 from her for sending her son Prem Singh to UK. She alleged that the accused neither kept their promise nor returned the money.

Condemned: Local MLA Randip Singh, municipal councillors and members of the Sweets Makers Association, Dalit Front, Arts and Craft Front and many other associations organised a meeting at the Rest House here on Monday. They condemned the Sunday incident in which a trader, with the help of some other persons, snatched cameras and microphones of some electronic mediamen who had gone there to cover the event of the sale of substandard desi ghee.

Firing incident: Panic gripped Bashroop village and the surrounding areas after two motorcycle-borne youths first fired into the air and then at a Mahindra jeep they were chasing near Sujanpur on Monday. The incident occurred while the jeep was crossing Badshahi canal with two occupants. Later, the jeep occupants and the motorcyclists had heated arguments in the village following which villagers gathered there. A case has been registered.
