More samples of eatables taken

Ludhiana, July 24
Under the directions of the state health department, several teams took samples of eatables from the rural areas in the district yesterday to curb adulteration and sale of sub-standard food items.

Giving this information here today, civil surgeon Dr Sat Pal Sharma said three samples of fruit juice and one of milk cake were taken from Mullanpur, one each sample of cold drink was taken from Sidhwan Kalan and Chowki Maan, two samples of wheat flour were taken from Jagraon while another sample of loose tea leaves was taken from Sidhwan Bet.

All these samples were sent to government analyst at Chandigarh and on the basis of laboratory report, the defaulters would be proceeded under the provisions of the PFA Act 1954, if any of the food stuff was found adulterated.

Dr Sharma further said last month a sample of mustard oil taken from a local manufacturer had been certified as "misbranded" by the government laboratory since the product was not labelled as per the provisions of the PFA Act. The prosecution proceedings against the defaulting firm were in the process of being launched in a local court.

He indicated that the ongoing campaign to check adulteration and sale of poor quality food items in the district would be stepped up.
