Course
: The Academic Staff College of Guru Nanak Dev University in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics will organise a three-week refresher course in mathematics for university and college teachers from August 9. Dr Parminder Singh, head, Department of Mathematics, will be the course coordinator, a university press note said here on Tuesday.

Land records
: All land records will be computerised shortly. This was stated by deputy commissioner V.K.Ohri while inaugurating computerisation of land records.

Theft: Thieves decamped with copper wire worth Rs 70,000 from a store on the local College Road on Monday. Last year also, a large quantity of copper wire was stolen from this very store. The local police deputed about 116 community police officers (CPOs) in June to check incidents of theft during night. Residents complain that the CPOs have not been able to check thefts.

Eco-drive
: The local unit of the Punjab Eco-Friendly Association (PEFA) planted saplings of a variety of trees on the premises of the local Hazi Rattan Gurudwara to increase its green cover. Karanjeet Singh Brar, joint secretary (Public Relations), said PEFA would make sapling plantation a mass movement to increase the green cover in the district. 

Held for rape: A woman, mother of two children, was allegedly raped in her house at Kothe Kaur Singh Wala village of the district by Vakil Singh of the same village, when she was alone. Though the suspect Vakil raped the woman on Sunday, the police registered a case under Section 376, IPC, against him on Monday after getting the medical examination of the victim done at the local Civil Hospital. Vakil has been arrested. 

FARIDKOT
Stock found
: The police found a huge quantity of medicines from a room of an abandoned girls hostel of a private school at Kotkapura,13 km from here, on Monday. Confirming this, Balwinder Singh Bajwa, DSP, Kotkapura, said following a tip-off, a raid was conducted. He said the room was sealed and the case was handed over to the Drugs Department to carry out further inquiry adding the medicines did not contain material used for drugs by addicts.

Honoured
: The Bharat Vikas Parishad at a function organised at KMRD Jain College on Monday honoured Robin Jindal, son of Dr Parveen Jindal, for his outstanding performance in the PMET. Robin got the 10th rank in the test. R K Mehta, regional president of the parishad, presented a memento to Robin.

BILASPUR
Workshop gutted
: A fire caused by a short circuit engulfed the workshop of one self-employed youth, Baldev Sharma, Chalaihali village, 40 km. from here, on Monday evening. Villagers tried to extinguish the fire but all in vain. Equipments of the workshop were destroyed. A loss of Rs 1.50 lakh has been reported. The police has registered a case. 

Boy drowns: Ankit (12) of Dehalwin village in the Dahad gram panchayat here was drowned in Gobind Sagar while taking a bath on the bank with some friends on Monday. He was a student of class IV. Bhuri Singh, who was cutting grass nearby, tried to save the boy. He took him out of the water and rushed to the Jhandutta Community Health Centre. However, Ankit was declared brought dead. Naib tehsildar G.R. Bansal handed over Rs 5,000 as ex gratia to the bereaved family.

Press Club
: K.B.Sharma was unanimously elected president of the Nurpur Press Club on Monday. He nominated the following office-bearers: chief patron - Rakesh Bharti; chief adviser- Viney Mahajan; vice-president- Rishi Mahajan, cashier- Rushant Mahajan; office secretary-cum-spokesperson- Sunil Dogra. A disciplinary committee comprising four members was also constituted.
