Cattle electrocuted: Two cattle got electrocuted while taking a dip in a pond located at Malukpura village on Thursday. Residents rued that more than a dozen deaths due to the existence of electricity poles had been reported to block development and panchayat officers besides sub-divisional engineers in the Punjab State Electricity Board, but none bothered to prevent recurrence of loss of the livestock.
Cop suspended: The district police has suspended constable Pappu Ram, sources said on Friday. He had been abstaining from duty for the past few days as certain residents named him in criminal complaints. He was charged with helping a faction in the family dispute out of the way.
nabbed: A team of the Agriculture Department, led by APPO Sukhdev Singh Brar, on Thursday night carried out a raid on an isolated house located on the Kandhwala road here, near the Nai Abadi locality, and recovered more than 600 lt of insecticides manufactured by Gharda Chemicals Maharashtra. The packing had expired, but fresh levels printed in Bathinda were being used to market the lot. The expired insecticides, used for spray to kill mealy-bug etc, had allegedly been purchased on a throwaway price from the C and F agent based at Bathinda. One employee of the company was nabbed from the godown.
Proposal: Guru Nanak Dev University has submitted a proposal for setting up of an Institute for Innovative and Emerging Technologies and it is under the active consideration of the union government. Addressing a press conference here on Friday , vice-chancellor, Dr Jai Rup Singh, said the university had also proposed a Centre for Molecular Medicine at a cost of Rs 33 crore with financial assistance from the ICMR. Besides, a Centre for Blood Diseases, Stem Cells, Umbilical Cord and Adult Blood Banking at a cost of Rs 24 crore and a Rs 10-crore Bioinformatics and Information Technology Park are also in the pipeline.
with smack: Quadian police recovered 10 grams of smack and 300 intoxicant capsules from two persons on Thursday evening. The police team, headed by DSP Quadian Ajaib Singh, arrested the accused, identified as Balwinder Singh of Kiri Afgana village and Sukhwinder Singh of Dalla village at a naka. A case has been registered.
Kidnap bid: Sadar police on Friday booked Sonu of Bilaspur for
allegedly abducting a teenaged girl of Bajwara Kalan village. Paramjit, foster
father of 16-year-old Pinki, said he received an information on Thursday
evening that Sonu had abducted his daughter and the duo was going towards
Hoshiarpur. He along with his brother Karam Chand reached Shergarh bypass. On
seeing them, Sonu fled on his scooter, leaving the girl in an unconscious
state. She was admitted to the local civil hospital. The accused is still at
Chain snatched: Two
unidentified clean-shaven scooter-borne youths snatched a gold chain weighing
around 3.5 tola from Ritu of New Model Colony on Friday afternoon. Ritu was
standing in front of her house when the miscreants suddenly appeared, snatched
the chain and sped away. A case has been registered under sections 382
of the IPC.
Case registered: Four policemen have been suspended following the escape of a criminal from their custody on Wednesday night. The policemen were identified as Satnam Singh, SHO, Baljinder, ASI, Kewal Singh, head constable, and Karnail Singh, home guard. Escaped criminal Lakhveer Singh of Rama Mandi, Jalandhar, was held for stealing a motorcycle on August 7. A case was registered against the police personnel. Meanwhile, Lakhveer Singh was arrested again.
Labourer held: The police has arrested migratory labourer Raj
Kishore, a son of Rattan Dev, under section 377, IPC, allegedly for molesting a
minor boy in the grain market here. The case was registered against him on the
basis of a complaint lodged by Panni Devi, mother of the victim.
Development officer: Daljeet Kaur has taken over as the child development project officer (CDPO), here on Thursday in place of Saroj Rani, who has been transferred to Sirhind. The post of CDPO has been lying vacant for the past two months.

NGO drive: The Association of People for Transparency, an NGO, while expressing concern over the non-implementation of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act - 2003 in a big way at public places, on Wednesday asked the Punjab and union governments to make the displaying of ‘no-smoking area’ hoardings mandatory in their offices. Kamal Anand, general secretary, said some other NGOs and social activists had decided to launch a joint campaign against smoking at public places.
