Notice of motion issued: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has, on a petition filed by Dimple Miglani, resident of Radhasoami Colony here, issued a notice of motion to the Punjab government, SSP, Ferozepur, and SHO, City, for September 21. Justice L. N. Mittal in his orders said the counsel for the petitioner stated that the police authorities were not taking any action whenever the petitioner (Dimple) approached them regarding threats being extended to her and her family by private respondents. Miglani, who had spearheaded a campaign against the land mafia allegedly led by a Canada-based NRI having agricultural farm near here, is secretary of the Land Grabbing Victims Association.

Man kills 2: The district police on Saturday arrested Sukhwinder Singh of Rampur village near Fatehgarh Churian for allegedly killing his wife and brother for allegedly having illicit relations.A case under Section 302, IPC, has been registered against the accused at Sadar police station here. The accused killed his wife Paramjit Kaur (30) and brother Balwinder Singh (25) with a sharp- edged weapon late Friday evening when he saw them in an objectionable position.

SELECTED: Electronics giant Siemens has hired a student from IET, Bhaddal. The student, who is from the 2003 batch of the electronics and instrumentation engineering department, will get an annual package of Rs 2.7 lakh, the college spokesperson said.

Seminar on drug abuse: A seminar on “Drug abuse, tuberculosis (TB), and AIDS — Importance of Public awareness”, organised at Jawahar Navodaya School at Longowal on Friday ended with hundreds of students and teachers of the school taking a pledge in this regard.

Tribal utsav: Bharmour’s resident commissioner N.K. Lath on Saturday said Independence Day would be celebrated as a ‘tribal utsav’ in Bharmour. He said a meeting in that regard was held at Bharmour in which it was decided to give importance to local folklore of the tribal region.

Navratras fair: All arrangements for the 10-day shravan ashtami navratra fairs at Shri Naina Devi Ji are complete and the shrine is ready to receive devotees drawn from all parts of the country. DC and District Magistrate Rajinder Singh said the entire area has been divided into nine sectors, and each sector would be headed by an executive Magistrate assisted by a police force headed by a police officer. He said carrying of arms, explosives and weapons had been banned from August 13 to August 24 and offering of prasad and coconuts to the deity has also been banned and no loud instruments shall be allowed in the area. 

Honoured: Rajinder Singh DC on Saturday honoured four panchayat presidents and other representatives in a block-level function organized by Bilaspur sadar development block at Lakhanpur to the totally clean panchayat where every household had been provided with a safe toilet under the Total Sanitation Campaign. Those honoured included Capt. Jindu Ram (Kandraur), Ramesh Kumar(Barmana), Kaur Singh Dhiman (Panjgain) and Pyare lal (Raghunathpura). Other leaders who were honoured were - Budhi Singh Thakur, Ram Chand Dangi, Bimla Chaudhari, Neena Kaushal, Bhagat Singh Verma, Judhya Devi and Tanuja Devi, Shyam Lal, Jagat Pal, Kanta Devi and Shyamlal.

Suicide: A 45-year-old migrant labourer allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself with the help of a piece of cloth from the ceiling fan of his room in the Yol cantonment area of the town on Friday night. Police sources said the deceased had been identified as Jagdish Chand of Teekva Paati village in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh.
