Gets 22 illegal developers booked

Getting tough with unapproved developers, responsible for the haphazard growth of the city and causing a loss to the public exchequer, the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA) has got 22 persons booked under section 36 of the Punjab Apartment and Property Regulation Act, 1995.

Shop razed to throw tenant out

In order to get a shop vacated from their tenant, owners of a local marriage palace allegedly demolished the structure in the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.

Won’t part with land, say irate farmers

The proposal of the tourism department, Punjab, to set up a water sports park on the National Highway No. 1 alongside the Sutlej near Ludhiana by acquiring several acres has made hundreds of families of farmers see red who have decided to protest the move tooth and nail.

Ring Road likely to get delayed
Ludhiana, August 13
The much talked about Ludhiana Ring Road project may get delayed after the state government decided to redraw its contours and cancel the expression of interest invited in June 2006.

Dr Vatsyayan’s book on herbs released

Ludhiana, August 13
“Herbs and Health”, the compilation of 55 select articles of Dr R. Vatsyayan, was released by Dr L.S. Chawla, founder vice-chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, here last evening. The articles, included in the book, had been chosen from his writings carried on the Health and Fitness page of The Tribune. Syed Nooruzzaman, assistant editor, The Tribune, presided over the function.

Run Against Drugs
150 youths take part
Ludhiana, August 13
More than 150 boys and girls took part in a run against drug addiction under the banner of the Prime Bodies Health Club from Shastri Nagar to the Pakhowal Road here on Sunday. The purpose of the event was to wean the youth away from drugs and other intoxicating substances, and instead motivate them to take onto health and fitness.

Noted Punjabi sufi singer Hans Raj Hans has appealed the people of Punjab to vote for their daughter from Ludhiana, Arshpreet Kaur in Amul-Voice of India contest, which is being telecast at Star Plus every Friday and Saturday. The singer had come to Ramgarhia Girls College today urging people to vote for the budding artist.

Malls spell parking chaos

Thanks to the unplanned mushrooming of malls in the posh Sarabha Nagar and surrounding areas, the locality is fast losing its sheen and charm. The once smooth ride along the Malhar Road is no longer so, rather it now turns out to be too nightmarish. At times the less than one-km-long stretch of road, takes 15 to 20 minutes to cross. Same is the case with Malhar Road, Rani Jhansi Road and the Cemetry Road, which were once considered to be wide.

Dullo faces angry losers

The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president, Shamsher Singh Dullo, had to face angry candidates who lost the recently held elections to the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation. Dullo had called a review meeting of the party here yesterday. He had asked all the aggrieved candidates to give their complaints in writing.

5 hurt in road mishap

Five persons, including three pedestrians, were injured when a truck driver lost control over his vehicle and hit the three-wheeler and crashed it against another truck carrying Naina Devi pilgrims at Kup Da Tota, near here, last evening. The injured were immediately shifted to hospitals by the police and passersby.

The Punjab State Veterinary Officers Association (PSVOA) has condemned the state government’s decision to increase tuition fee in private medical and dental colleges in Punjab, both for the government and management quota seats.

Priya Gupta Priya tops in MSc (IT)

Keeping with the tradition of producing university toppers, the department of computer science of Khalsa College for Women has once again shown excellent results in M.Sc (IT) IInd year results. Priya Gupta stood first in the university scoring 2098/2300 marks. It is for the fifth time in a row that Priya has topped the university. She topped in all three years of BCA and then in M.Sc (IT) Ist year and now IInd year. Rishu stood second with while Inderpreet stood third in the university.

Zee Sports to telecast Federation Cup

Zee Sports will telecast all matches of the ONGC Nehru Football Cup and Federation Cup live. Nehru Cup is slated to be played from August 17 to 29 in New Delhi. Besides India, teams from Syria, Krygyzstan, Bangladesh and Cambodia will be seen in action during this event to be played on round-robin basis.

Defending champion, Rama Bhattacharji thrashed Ritu 25-0 to win the title in the women's section of the Life Insurance Corportion of India Divisional Level Carrom Tournament organised at the LIC of India divisional office, Dugri, here today.
