Students’ cells
: Guru Nanak Dev University has constituted students counselling and grievances redressal cells with Prof Sarup Singh, dean, Students Welfare, as the convener.A university statement here on Monday said other members of the cells included Dr Paramjit Kaur Dhindsa, Dr M.D. Singh, Dr Geeta Hundal, Dr Surinder Tung,Dr Gurnam Singh, Dr Rajinder Pawar, Dr Balwinder Arora and Dr Rajinder Kaur.

Objected to: Baldev Singh Sirsa, senior vice-president of the Akali Dal (Amritsar),on Monday objected to the setting up of a chair named “Satguru” Ram Singh Namdhari at Guru Nanak Dev University here.Addressing a press conference, Sirsa questioned Joginder Singh Vedanti, Jathedar, Akal Takht, why the Sikh clergy kept quiet on the issue.

7 booked: The Kathunangal police has booked seven persons, including three women, for allegedly kidnapping Bhavna (22), a resident of Batala, here on Monday. Harbans Lal Sharma, father of the victim, in his complaint alleged that Ajit Pal, his two sons Satpal and Narain, daughter Seema, wife Sheela, all residents of Kathunangal, along with Nikku and his wife Darshna, had abducted his daughter. Bhavna, who is a staff nurse trainer at Guru Amar Das Nursing Centre here.

Roof collapses
: The roof of the Handiaya police chowki collapsed on Monday afternoon. The chowki was housed in an old building.Head constable Baldev Singh sustained some injuries. He has been hospitalised at the Civil Hospital.

NCC camp
: The 13 Punjab Battalion NCC organised a 13-day combined annual training camp which started on August 5, 2007. Lt Col J.P.S. Bhullar, camp commandant, said 337 cadets from various schools and colleges participated.Army doctors gave lectures on AIDS, female foeticide and drug abuse. Colonel Bhullar said outstanding cadets would be handpicked to participate in the Thal Sena Camp competition to be held in New Delhi where Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would address them.

Students call on minister:
Resentment prevails among the students of COE automobile course at Industrial Training Institute (ITI) here as they are allegedly not being provided advance training which is a must for getting them fair placements. A deputation of the students met minister for higher education and research Tikshan Sud on Monday and presented a memorandum to him in this regard. They told Sud that as many as 115 students were admitted in the COE course. They received training in three models which was not sufficient. The minister assured them that he would take up the matter with the authorities concerned.

BSF meet begins
: As many as 650 sportsmen of international and national repute from the Border Security Force (BSF) are here to participate in the five-day inter-frontier basketball, handball, volleyball and kabaddi competitions which started today.The meet was opened by Arvind Ranjan, IG, frontier headquarters, Jalandhar.

Dowry case
: Newly married Amandep Kaur alleged that she was forced to consumepoisonous substance by her husband and in-laws for want of more dowry.The Badhani Kalan police registered a case of attempt to murder against her husband Mahinder Singh, his mother Jagir Kaur and brother Joginder Singh, residents of Buttar Kalan village.Amandeep Kaur had got married about half a year ago.

Shop burgled
: Miscreants stole goods worth Rs 12,000 from Bittu General Store at Mukerian on Sunday night. According to shop owner Vijay Kumar, thieves decamped with cash and valuables. In another incident, two unidentified persons snatched a gold chain weighing 20 gm from Inderjit Kaur of Mohalla Pritam Nagar. The incident took place on Monday evening while the woman was taking a stroll near Jassa Singh Ramgarhia Chowk. A case under sections 382 and 34 of the IPC has been registered.

CPM protest: Activists of the CPM, led by Gurmesh Singh, organised a demonstration in the main market of the town here to protest against police firing on a peaceful agitation by the CPI and CPM workers at Khamam district in Andhra Pradesh. As many as eight party workers were killed in the incident. The agitators burnt the effigy of AP Chief Minister and demanded registration of a case under section 302 and immediate arrest of “guilty police officers”.

Camp for disabled:
The local unit of Himoutkarsh Jankalyan Parishad on Monday organised an medical camp for disabled persons in the civil hospital here in collaboration with the Mahavir Handicapped Assistance Samiti, Ambala cantt. As many as 25 disabled patients were examined and 12 were shortlisted for artificial limbs. The samiti has promised to provide limbs to them free of cost on September 2.

Office-bearers:
The state BJP has declared the following office-bearers of its Shahpur constituency unit: Ram Rattan Pattaku-president; Raghuvir Singh and Mahender Thakur— vice-presidents; Madan Sharma— general secretary; Meena Kumar and Ashok Kumar-secretaries; and Manmohan Dhiman—treasurer. A 24-member executive has also been constituted.
