Talent hunt
: Rupinder Kaur was declared the best dancer in gidha during the three-day talent hunt competitions, which concluded at the DAV College auditorium on Sunday. Narender Kaur was declared runner’s-up. Other toppers included Isha Khetarpal (solo dance-girls), Deepak Kumar (solo dance-boys), Ginnipreet (group dance general-girls), Shakun (group dance general-boys), Meenu Goyal (mehandi), Poonam Godara (rangoli), Lalit Kumar (collage-making and dry flower decoration), Pardeep Kumar (cartooning and poster-making), Bhawna Sethi (fresh flower decoration) and Dhirender Kumar (on- the-spot painting). Principal Dr B.C Josan honoured the winners. 

3 die in mishap : Chandu Ram (57), employed with the Animal Husbandry Department, his wife Birma Rani, and their grand son Navdeep (5) died in a fatal accident near Rohranwali village on Sunday while they were on their way to Hanumangarh.

PO arrested: A proclaimed offender (PO) was arrested seven years after being accused of robbery of a rural branch of Punjab National Bank in this subdivision. DSP Parampal Singh said on Monday that a case against seven unidentified persons was registered on April 13, 2000, on a complaint of the manager of Balluana branch of PNB for looting Rs 2.72 lakh on April 12. While the police had arrested two persons, now the police nabbed Lakhbir Singh from his house at Katakheri village near Fatehabad.

BARNALA
Strike: To lodge their protest against the manhandling of XEN Gurpal Singh by the PSEB employees, the engineer association, Sangrur region, held a pen-down strike in Barnala and Sangrur districts on Monday. A meeting was held under the presidentship of zonal secretary Jasbir Singh Diwan.

Rape
: A minor Scheduled Caste girl of Mehraj village of this district was allegedly raped by her father in the past seven days. The matter came to light when the victim, after gathering enough courage, reported the matter to police. Police sources said Jagroop Singh Jupa, the accused, had been arrested.

Batala
Sports function: A block level sports function was organised here on Friday by Gurdaspur district sports officer at Baring Union Christian College Ground. While presiding over the function Batala SDM Sandeep Rishi urged the youth to keep away from drugs and participate in sports. The SDM also announced that  person bringing laurel for the area would also be  honored by the district administration. 

GURDASPUR
Mishap: At least 12 passengers including women, were injured, when a private bus by which they were travelling had a head-on collision with a truck on the Gurdaspur-Pathankot highway at Parmanand village near Dinanagar on Monday. Traffic was disrupted on the highway for over an hour. The police has impounded the vehicles.

Urged
: Sri Ram Charit Manas Parchar Mandal urged AICC Sonia Gandhi and president of the BJP Rajnath Singh to declare publically that they would never enter into any political alliance with the DMK and the DK. In a press statement here on Monday, president of the mandal Harish Saini stated that all members had condemned Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for questioning the existence of Lord Rama.

IAF cycle race: The Indian Air Force organised a cycle race competition for women and children to mark its platinum jubilee at Adampur on Sunday. Air Commodore, Arup Raha, Air Officer Commanding, air force station, Adampur flagged off the race. As many as 14 events were held for women and children in different age groups.

World Holy Day
: The Ludhiana chapter of International Society for Krishna Consciousness(ISKCON) observed World Holy Day here on Monday.Temple president Rajsuya Das said chanting of holy name eradicates envy and brings real peace, unity and fraternity in society.

Memorandum submitted: Urban state Ram Lila Dushera committee president Raj Garg and committee members submitted a memorandum to local bodies minister Manoranjan Kalia on Monday. In it they urged him to order authorities to grant permission to them for celebrating Ram Lila and Dushera melas from October 5 to October 22. Garg has threatened that if PUDA fails to grant permission within three days, they will protest in front of the PUDA office. 

PATHANKOT
Suicide: Laxmi Dass, a resident of Mathauli village in Nurpur subdivision of Kangra district, committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree near the railway station here on Monday morning. The family members said Laxmi Dass had been to Manimahesh Yatra and called at home two days ago.

City Club gets new look
: Punjab technical education minister Chaudhary Swarana Ram inaugurated renovated building of Phagwara City Club. He also donated Rs two lakh for the club which has tie-ups with 50 other prestigious clubs of the country. Phagwara SDM and club vice-president Amarjeet Paul said thrust would be on promoting traditional cultural activities through the club. A cultural programme was also perfomed by ghazal and bhajan singer Vijay Sharma. Over 200 people were present on the occasion.

Yoga camp: The Patanjali Yog Samiti is organizing an eight-day yoga camp at Baradari Gardens, under the supervision of Yog teacher Braham Kumar. He said prayanam, light exercise and asnas are very useful for the overall fitness. During the free camp, special attention would be given to weight-reducing exercises, besides the exercises for getting rid of numerous chronic ailments.

: The MGN, Jalandhar, defeated MGN, Kapurthala, by 49-33 to lift the title of boys of the CBSE  Sahodaya Inter-School Basketball Tournament (under 19) which  concluded at Kirpal Sagar Academy, here yesterday.While, in the girls  section APJ, Jalandhar, beat Army Public School, Jalandhar by 43-27 and won the girls title

Consumer body meeting
: The Consumer Protection Forum has appealed to the Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to upgrade the civil hospital here to a 200-bed facility. The forum held a meeting wherein members took a serious view of health minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla’s move of not upgrading the hospital. The members argued that the population of the town had increased to about 3 lakh and Mohali had come on the world map with various upcoming mega projects here. — TNS

Charter ceremony held: The Rotary Club organised the charter ceremony of Interact Club at Police DAV Public School, Ambala City, on Monday. School principal Dr Vikas Kohli said former district governor Gulshan Thakral was the chief guest on the occasion. He lauded the efforts in installing the Interact Club and emphasised on cultivating among the youth social objectives, spirit of cooperation, dignity of labour, training of skills and character building. The office-bearers of the club are Naveen (president), Jaspreet (secretary) and Preeti (joint secretary). As many as 35 school students were enrolled as club members. 

Case adjourned till Oct 9: All the accused in Ranjit murder case were produced in the court of Special Judge R.K. Saini on Monday. The court adjourned the hearing for October 9. Ranjit Singh, a follower of Dera Sachha Sauda, was murdered on July 10, 2002 in his village, Khanpur Kaliyan. The police had registered a murder case against five - Krishan Lal, Sabdil Singh, Jasbir Singh, Awtar Singh and Inder Sain. In its chargesheet, the CBI has also dera chief Baba Ram Rahim Gurmit Singh an accused in the case. The CBI alleged that Ranjit Singh was murdered on the direction of the dera chief.

Ransacked: Miscreants ransacked an ancient temple in Beri town of the district on Sunday. The police has registered a case under Sections 195 and 201 of the IPC.

SONEPAT
Wheat import: Former media adviser to the state government and president of the Sonepat Vikas Parishad Rajiv Jain has criticised the import of wheat by the Central government on double the prices of the minimum support price (MSP) of the government and termed it as a fraud with Indian farmers. 

Health camp : Eightyeight persons, including 16 women, on Sunday opted to donate their eyes after death and 51 persons donated blood at a health camp organised by the Samaj Seva Samiti in Sant Gurcharan Dass charitable hospital here. Nearly 1,520 patients, including children were medically examined and treated free of cost.

YAMUNANAGAR
Property seized: The State Bank of India, Yamunanagar, has taken physical possession of property at Green Nest on the Bilaspur Road owned by Suman Victor of Nalagarh Ka Majra, Jagadhri. The bank in a statement said Suman had taken a study loan from the bank but failed to repay it. 

Khula darbar : The district public relation department in association with the deputy commissioner’s office will be holding khula darbars in each of the six development blocks of the district for the benefit of the general public starting from Sadhaura on September 19. 

Board-HDFC tie-up: The Board of School Education (BOSE), Haryana, has tied up with HDFC bank so that students and school managements affiliated with the Bose could deposit fees and purchase forms at district headquarters.
