Girl refuses to marry dowry-seeker
Our Correspondent

Hoshiarpur, September 20
Jaswinder Kaur daughter of Khajan Singh of Miani has refused to marry Army man Gurwinder Singh son of Lachhman Singh of Himatpur near Bhan Singh Di Kotli (Gurdaspur), as he had demanded a car in dowry.

Jaswinder Kaur took this step yesterday when she came to know her would-be husband wanted car in dowry.

The girl refused to marry the boy despite the marriage party from her would- be husband’s side reached a marriage palace on the periphery of her village and all relatives and friends of the girl and the boy’s side had assembled there.

According to police sources, marriage of Jaswinder Kaur was settled with Gurwinder Singh on September 19, . Family members of the girl went to Bhan Singh Di Kotli on September 18, for ‘shagun’ ceremony of Gurwinder Singh and gave a gold chain, a ring and a gold bracelet to Gurwinder Singh , but he was not satisfied with these articles. He allegedly ws unhappy with in-laws’ family for not giving a motorcycle in shagun and said these small items were being given even to farm labourers at such ceremonies. He told them they would come to solemnise the marriage next day if a car would be given to him.

Yesterday, when the marriage party from boy’s side reached a marriage palace on the periphery of Miani village, the boy told the family members of the girl the marriage party would enter the venue only if car’s keys were handed over to him. The parents of the girl showed helplessness in giving him a car.

When Jaswinder Kaur came to know about the demand, she was very disappointed and decided not to marry such a greedy person. She told her parents if he was demanding a car before marriage, he might ask for more things after marriage and she would not remain happy with him. The decision of Jaswinder Kaur was supported by her family members.

This decision of the girl infuriated Gurwinder Singh who took off the gold bracelet given to him by Jaswinder Kaur's family during shagun ceremony, and threw it towards them. This action of the boy created tension there.

On realising the situation, Gurwinder Singh along with members of the marriage party proceeded to their village threatening members of Jaswinder Kaur's family.

People of the girl's village and adjoining villages are praising her courage for opposing dowry seekers.
