Sensex does its own jig, hits 17K

Mumbai, September 26
The Sensex breached the 17,000 mark today in record time to join in the celebrations. It took the benchmark index just five sessions to rally 1000 points. Though it touched 17,073 in intra-day deals, it slipped to 16,921 levels at close.

The main gainers today were led by Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank and Larsen & Toubro. Tech majors joined in the party after several months of hammering with Satyam Computer and Wipro surging over four per cent each. TCS, HDFC, Infosys Technologies, SBI, Tata Steel, Cipla, Dr Reddys, ONGC and ACC were some of the other gainers.

However, Reliance Energy at Rs 1,026 levels slipped 5.6 per cent or Rs 61 by close. Reliance Industries, NTPC, Maruti Suzuki India, Mahindra & Mahindra and Hindalco also closed weak in the BSE 30 pack.

In the broader markets, the Nifty ended the day flat at 4,940 levels, up 2 points. It touched a high of 4,980 levels in intra-day deals.
