Time not ripe for troop cut, says Army chief
Tribune News Service

Srinagar, October 6
Army Chief Gen Deepak Kapoor today said conditions in the valley were not conducive for any troop cut. He did not think it possible till normalcy returned to the state.

General Kapoor, who after taking over as the Army Chief, was on his first visit to the state, added that the Army would work on the directions of political leadership with whom the final decision lay.

He did not see much in the recent spurt in encounters as it was an old tactic of militants to increase violence to break any spell of peace, which is the case in the valley at present. The Army chief was addressing mediapersons at 34 Rashtriya Rifles, which recently dealt a blow to the LeT by killing nine suspected foreign militants in an encounter. Two of its officers were also killed in the gunfight.

The General later met Governor S.K. Sinha at Raj Bhawan.
