The following have been elected office-bearers of the district unit of the Punjab Non-Gazetted Forest Officers Union: president-Balwinder Singh Jhurarkhera; vice- president-Gurjit Singh Zira; divisional secretary-Mohinder Singh Dhaliwal; finance secretary-Krishan Kamboj and joint secretary- Inderaj.

Honoured: Principal Neelam Arun Mittu of Gopi Chand Arya Mahila College honoured Rachna Rani, a student of BA final year, for standing in merit among students of the Ferozepur-Moga zone in an exam conducted by Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle on moral education. 

Theft:Thieves stole 80 gm gold jewellery and other articles worth Rs 1 lakh from a house at Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar on Thursday night. Sukhwinder Singh, owner of the house, said three thieves injured him when he tried to stop them. The police has started investigation.

Dharna lifted:
The two-day drama ended with the intervention of municipal committee president Makhan Sharma who felt regret for the demolition of the temple wall by MC employees on Thursday evening. With his assurance to the agitators the dharna was called off. Swami Sehaj Parkash of Maurawali Kutiya had led the demonstration. 

Cremated: Former Congress MLA and freedom fighter Ranjeet Singh Neenewal (90) was cremated at his native village Naneewal (Tapa) with full state honours.Jaipal Singh, SDM, Tapa, Satwant Singh, DSP, Tapa, Parmjeet Singh Manna, former chairman, Improvement Trust, and other prominent people of the area participated in the cremation. 

Jaswinder Kaur, 35, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at Jhandu Ke village in the district on Friday.Police sources said Jaswinder did not have any children and was depressed. She had suffered miscarriage in the past.A case has been registered at the Kalanwali police station.

Madame, a fashion wear brand for women, opened its 36th store in Flamez mall on friday.Madame, the brand of Jain Amar Clothing. The company plans to open more exclusive stores and shop-in-shops in all major fashion markets across the country.

Store opened: Simon Tata of the Tata Group on friday inaugurated the company’s first lifestyle store, Westside, operated by Trent Limited, a Tata enterprise at the West End mall here.Tata is planning to open more stores in Jalandhar, Amritsar and Chandigarh soon.

Members of the Rice Millers Association (RMA), led by local president Hukam Chand Chabbra, staged a protest in front of the office of the PUNSUP here on Thursday. They protested against the ‘selected’ distribution of paddy to shellers, regardless of the minimum moisture level. Their protest ended following an assurance given by PUNSUP officials.

2 killed: Hakam Singh and the driver of the car were killed and an equal number of persons were injured following collision with a truck at Baghapurana near here on Friday. The accident took place when a paddy-laden truck was coming out of the grain market on the road. Both deceased and injured persons were traveling in the car. 

Embezzlement: Gurdev Singh, president, Cooperative Agriculture Service Society, Daudhar, was given a four-day police remand here on Friday.Members of the society are charged with embezzlement and forgery.Following a complaint from former president of the society Jugraj Singh, associated with the SAD, the Badhani Kalan police station registered a case against 14 employees and members of the society, including its president.

Power shutdown
: Due to some urgent repair of the 66 KV power feeder in Dharampura Bazar, the power supply in Desi Mehmandari, Bus Stand, Lahori Gate, Shere Punjab Market, TB Hospital Road, Tawakli Mor, Sheranwala Gate and Dhanka Mohalla will remain suspended from 10 am to 2 pm on October 13. And the power supply in Friends Colony, Dhaliwal Colony, Fateh Chand Colony, Yadavindra Colony, Main Post Office, Chhoti Baradari, Khalsa Mohalla, Nabha Gate, Lower Mall and Bagichi Het Ram, have also been suspended from 8 am to 12 noon on October 13, due to some urgent work at Bhupindra Power Feeder. 



Low water supply
: Water supply will be hit on October 15 with water pressure remaining low because of repair in the main pipeline from Kajauli to Sector 39, Chandigarh.



Appointed: Sandeep Duggal has been appointed Ambala Youth Congress block president. District Congress Committee president Narinder Pal Singh Shera said Duggal had been in active politics since his student days. He said Duggal had also been the district secretary of the Haryana Congress Committee human rights cell.

Lara murder case: The CBI has arrested three more persons in Rakesh, alias Lara, murder case. The Gohana police had arrested Dinesh Kumar, Naresh Kumar and Sanjay yesterday. Earlier the prime accused, Ram Nivas, had also been arrested in this case. The CBI produced three of the accused in the court of RN Bharti, Special Magistrate for CBI cases. The court remanded them to judicial custody for one day. 

Sarpanch sacked:
Deputy commissioner O.P. Sheoran sacked Manohan Lal, sarpanch of Matana village in the district, for alleged irregularities in the distribution of old age pension on Friday.

Blood donation: A large number of persons donated their blood at a blood donation camp organised at Bhattu Kalan in the district on Friday. The camp was organised by a local philanthropist, Lok Ram Goyal, on the first death anniversary of his wife Meena Devi. 

Prof Pawan Sharma has been elected the zonal secretary of the All-India Federation of University and Colleges Teachers Organisation.

1 killed:
A motorcyclist was killed after an unidentified vehicle hit his motorcycle on the Barnala road here on Friday. The deceased has been identified as Goda Ram of Thani Panihari village. 

3 arrested: The police arrested three persons, including a drug peddler, Dhura Lal of Madhya Pradesh, and two locals Kaka and Kala Singh of Rania seizing 300 gm of smack from their possession on Thursday.

Poppy husk: The police arrested two drug peddlers, Surjit Singh and Teja Singh of Deshu Jodha village, and seized 10 kg of poppy husk from their possession on Friday. 

Fire in club:
Property worth thousands was destroyed when a fire broke out in sauna bathroom of the Yamuna Club here on Friday. However, no one was injured. Preliminary investigations revealed that short circuit was the cause behind the fire. 



DCC takes Nadda to task:
The District Congress Committee has lambasted former health minister and BJP leader Jagat Prakash Nadda for his repeated allegations of corruption against Congress leaders and the state government. It has asked him to look into his own deeds as the health minister before levelling charges against Congress leaders. Addressing mediapersons here, district Congress party spokesman and zila parishad member Jitender Chandel, who was accompanied by some prominent Congress leaders, including Rajender Pal Thakur, Kuldeep Singh, Anil Sankhyan and Brajesh Kaushal, said Nadda should not forget the Rs 5.18-crore purchase scandal under him in his department when he was the health minister. Such a person has no right to criticise others, he added. 

Gujjars’ charge:
The Gujjar Welfare Samiti, Surangani, has accused the Congress government of not coming up to their expectations as the government was overlooking their interests such as employment to their youths and other problems pertaining to the community in the state. At a meeting of the samiti, the Gujjars demanded that the Congress government must fulfil its election promises with regard to the welfare of Gujjar families and provide employment opportunities to their wards.

Sports meet:
A three-day district sports meet of private schools began at Hamirpur on Friday. The meet was inaugurated by chairman of the state School Education Board, B.R. Rahi. As many as 1,000 players from 52 schools would participate in the meet in which several events would be held.
