IT fiesta:
Principal Dr B. C. Josan inaugurated the IT fiesta organised by the Computer Department at the DAV College, here on Saturday. Winners in different contests were: Rama (paper presentation), Nidhi (paint brush), Manish (minesweepers), Neha (power finding), Karan Garg (web development), Nishant, Jasdeep and Lalit (quiz), Lalit (quiz programming).

Inauguration: Prof S. S. Bari, registrar, Panjab University, inaugurated the first session of the Kenway College of Education by lighting a lamp before the portrait of Bharat Mata here on Saturday. President Puran Chand Bansal, general secretary Sushil Garg and principal of the college Dr Satyender Singh welcomed the chief guests.

Escape: The driver and his assistant escaped by swimming when their tractor-trailer slipped into a sub-canal, while crossing the partly-damaged bridge between Alamgarh and Dharampura villages on Saturday. The villagers said complaints on the poor condition of the bridge had been made made many times during the past 20 years, but had failed to attract the attention of the administration.

Office-bearers: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Ferozepur circle (based on Ferozepur, Faridkot, Muktsar, Bathinda and Amritsar divisions) of the Punjab Non-Gazetted Forest Officers Union: president - Harinder Singh, Faridkot; vice-president - Kuldeep Kumar, Bathinda; general secretary - Balwinder Singh Sandhu, Abohar; finance secretary - Gursewak Singh, Amritsar; and joint secretary - Balwinder Bhatti. 

MOGA
Youth found dead:
Paramjit (21) was found dead under mysterious circumstances at Nihal Singh Wala subdivision, near here, on Saturday.Employed at a grocery shop, the deceased had been working there for the past eight years. On a complaint of Tirth Ram, brother-in-law of Paramjit, the Nihal Singh Wala police filed a case here on Saturday. According to police sources, nerves of the hand were found slit, while the body bore signs of head injury. The body was handed over to the family of the deceased after post-mortem.

PATIALA
Arrested
: The local police today arrested seven persons of a gang involved in cases of theft. Three scooters, two local made pistols and some fake affidavits were also recovered from them. Out of the seven arrested, Jaiveer Singh, Ashesh Kumar, Harkesh, Dharambir, Mohan Singh, Bhanu Partap and Bambi, are proclaimed offenders.

Celebrated: The festival of Dussehra was celebrated with great fervour by the staff and students of New Delhi Public School on the school premises, here, today. Tiny tots, dressed up like the characters of Ramayana, including Lord Rama, Hanumana and Lakshmana, presented a variety of items on the occasion.

Dussehra: Bhupindra International Public School celebrated Dussehra here today. A colourful function was organised in the school on the occasion. Later, principal Indu Sharma distributed prizes to the winners and congratulated the students and the staff of the school for their efforts in making the show a success. The function concluded with the National Anthem. Sweets were also distributed among the students.

Phagwara
Fatal fall for Class XI student:
A class XI student Surinder Singh (18) of Bhabhiana village fell down from an overloaded mini-bus on the Phagwara-Hoshiarpur highway on Saturday and died. The police has arrested it the driver.

Bias alleged: The previous Congress and the present SAD-BJP governments have been working on the same lines by adopting a discriminatory attitude towards panchayat samitis. This was alleged by local panchayat samiti chairperson Krishna Kainth here on Saturday.

MC chief:
SAD municipal councillor from Sunam Gurcharan Singh was unanimously elected president of the Sunam Municipal Council at a meeting held at Sunam on Saturday. Punjab PWD minister and MLA, Sunam, Parminder Singh Dhindsa also participated in the meeting. Executive officer of the council Rakesh Garg said Chand Mahant and Jagjit Singh, both municipal councillors, had been elected senior vice-president and vice-president, respectively, of the council.

TARN TARAN
4 nabbed:
The local police busted a notorious group and seized a large quantity of arms and ammunition from them on Saturday. SP Malwinder Singh Sidhu said four persons Didar Singh, alias Dari, Angrej Singh and Sahib Singh (three brothers) of Baba Bakala and Balraj Singh, alias Raju, of Khara village had been arrested. The fifth who managed to escape is Baljinder Singh, alias Dipty.

Fertiliser:
Director, Haryana Agriculture Department, Ashok Khemka said there was no shortage of DAP fertiliser in the state. However, to ensure adequate availability of phosphorus fertilisers, the Central government had decided to import the mono ammonia phosphorus (MAP). 

Appointed: The Haryana government has appointed Suvineet Sharma as additional advocate general in the office of the advocate general of the state.

Panchkula
Suicide attempt:
Vipin Garg, a resident of Sector 21, allegedly tried to commit suicide here today. He is involved in a marital discourse with his wife Deepti and had recently been released from jail. Vipin, also accused of involvement in throwing a petrol bomb at his in-laws’ resident in Chandigarh, is under stress, family sources said.

6 injured: Six persons were injured after a canter lost control on the Kalka-Shimla highway in Kalka here today. All the injured were admitted to a local hospital before being referred to the PGI where they were undergoing treatment. Police sources said the canter, driven by Kailash, hit a santro, a truck and a scooter, before coming to a halt. Kailash was accompanied by cleaner Anil and three others and they were on its way from Parwanoo to Panchkula.

Bhiwani
Suicide:
A woman reportedly committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance at Kitlana village in this district on Saturday. Sources said the woman, identified as Sunita, took the step because she was mistreated by her husband and brother-in-law. Police have registered a case against her husband and brother-in-law.

Rescued: A joint team of the People for Animals (PFA) and the police rescued buffaloes being taken in two trucks at a check post near Achina Taal village on Saturday. The check post was put up last night. The two trucks were stopped and when the police started checking up the vehicles, four persons tried to escape but were nabbed.

JHAJJAR
JE held:
A junior engineer of the UHBVN, Surender Kumar, was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 3,000 from Praveen and Sonu, residents of Badli, who had applied to install an electricity meter at their shop in Mohammadpur Majra village for clearing their file, by the vigilance department in Badli town of the district on Friday. He was held on the charge of corruption.

JIND
2 killed:
Two persons were killed, while one got injured, when their motorcycle rammed into a stationary truck on Friday. The trio hailing from Badanwala village in the district was going towards Bhiwani to attend a religious ceremony. Truck driver Baljit Singh rushed the three to the Civil Hospital, but two of the injured identified as Ramphal and his mother succumbed to their injuries. The third injured, Rajesh, escaped with minor injuries.
