HC officer raids Sector 39 police station
Issues notice to SSP, SHO on illegal detention

Chandigarh, October 23
Acting on a habeas corpus petition filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, a warrant officer raided the Sector 39 police station and found a man kept in illegal detention there. The officer issued a notice to the Chandigarh police on the matter.

Seventy-year-old Prakash Singh, a resident of Sector 15, was “shocked” when he received an electricity bill of over Rs 19,000 for his three-room accomodation. In Mansa Devi Complex, Kundan, a resident of GH-3, was equally appalled to get a bill of a mere Rs 281 against the usual bill of around Rs 5,000.

Car thief’s cell does him in
Chandigarh, October 23
Acing promptly, the Chandigarh police arrested a Mohali resident in less than 24 hours after he stole a car from the Sector 15 market here on Monday afternoon. The accused is said to be involved in several criminal cases, said the police.

The police tonight arrested four roadside vendors for allegedly assaulting a team of the municipal corporation enforcement wing in Manimajra. The team had reportedly gone to the area to remove encroachments.

An unidentified migrant labourer was killed while a motorcyclist was injured in two separate road accidents in the city during the past 24 hours.
