New Delhi, November 15
The civil aviation minister, Praful Patel, is believed to have sanctioned Rs 150 crore for the expansion of the Chandigarh airport, which provides easy connectivity to not only Punjab and Haryana but also to Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. On its part, Punjab reportedly wants to have a second international airport near Mohali.

Praful Patel also appears to have found merit in Independent Rajya Sabha MP from Haryana and former chairman of the National Commission for Minorities Tarlochan Singh’s forceful plea for establishing the state’s first domestic airport in Hisar and second international airport close to the national Capital in Jhajjar rather than scouting for a place nearly 100 km away in Uttar Pradesh.

He drew pointed attention to Moscow, London and several other world capitals having at least two to three international airports nearby. In this context, he said Jhajjar might be a good location for a second international airport near Delhi as the Delhi Metro was proposing to expand its services to Jehangirpuri/Karnal bypass.

Tarlochan Singh also took up the cause of having a domestic airport in Ludhiana and going ahead with the stalled expansion programme of the airport in Chandigarh, which uniquely serves as the capital of both Punjab and Haryana.

The MP made these observations at a meeting of the parliamentary consultative committee attached to the ministry of civil aviation held yesterday.

Tarlochan Singh also drew pointed attention to the Delhi-Amritsar-Delhi flights of a private airline being exorbitantly priced and sought the intervention of the civil aviation ministry in this regard.

Patel told the MP that he would get Indian Airlines to start a daily Delhi-Amritsar-Delhi service in two months time to blunt the monopoly of the private airline in this sector.
