Tangri men hold builder to ransom
Release him for Rs 57,000
Ludhiana, November 22
In a repeat of the Gur Mandi extortion and torture episode involving a former Shiv Sena (Rashtarwadi) leader, a builder was allegedly kidnapped and tortured for nine hours by 15 men at the office of former Shiv Sena leader Jagdish Singh Tangri on November 16, seeking Rs 1 lakh as ransom.

Excise department’s endless wait for FIR

Bidi makers ‘scuttle’ awareness move

The government of India recently notified an amendment to the Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products (Packaging and Labelling) Rules 2006, making it mandatory for cigarette and bidi manufacturers to display prominent pictorial warnings on all tobacco products. The amended rules are to take effect from December 1.

Trust initiative to revive green revolution

Realising the exploitation of water and soil, stagnation in crop yields, uncontrollable insect-pests and crippling debts and suicide by farmers, Sir Ratan Tata Trust operationalised its initiative, “Reviving the Green Revolution”, in partnership with the PAU in 2002 to seek answers and solutions to problems afflicting the rural Punjab.

PAU to set up centre of excellence: Kang 
Ludhiana, November 22
Punjab Agricultural University has in principle decided to create an advance centre of research in biotechnology. The centre will be named as “Ag-Biotech Centre of Excellence”. This was announced by vice-chancellor Manjit Singh Kang here today. He said the university would strive for strengthening its research and development in the field of agricultural biotechnology.

PAU accepts tractor drivers’ case

The court of judicial magistrate Vijay Kumar has sentenced B.P. Singh Chopra of Upasna Feeds, Amritsar, to undergo one-year imprisonment in a cheque bounce case. The accused has also been ordered to pay a fine of Rs 3,000.
