Punjab to seal drug supply routes

Chandigarh, November 28
Two days after The Tribune exposed how well-connected people in Punjab were fuelling drug trafficking by being either directly involved or by harbouring smugglers, the state government today announced a special drive to check drug trafficking by sealing “suspected drug supply routes” on all borders and talking strict action against all persons who are carriers and suspects in the trade.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal at a review meeting today made it clear to all SSPs that no laxity on this part would be tolerated. Badal came down heavily on drug trafficking and told the director-general of police NPS Aulakh to eliminate the nexus.

The SSPs have been directed to take stern action against the drug traffickers irrespective of their background and emphasised the need to evolve a multi-pronged strategy in tandem with the civil administration.

The SSPs will also be available for two days a week in their respective districts exclusively for interacting with people and redressing grievances of the people. This time the state would be monitoring “the presence of the SSPs” on two days earmarked for public meeting.

Badal also took the police to task on traffic management which, he said, was “quite shabby and inefficient in the urban areas”. He asked the traffic police for prompt clearing of traffic jams that led to blockages and inconvenience to the general public.

A committee has been constituted to recommend road safety norms in order to minimise road accidents. The SSPs have been told not to take petty crimes casually. Next in firing line will be erring travel agents who were duping the innocent youth through illegal practices and grossly flouted the norms of immigration.
