Decades of toil for only Rs 96 a day

Nacchatar Kaur has been cleaning weeds in the fields of the PAU for the past over 25 years. She is a daily labourer and is paid Rs 96 every day.
She has never sought regularisation of services, nor asked for a hike in wages or health benefits. “I feel sorry for the likes of Nacchatar Kaur because the university has never thought of regularising the services of labourers employed with it,” a senior university functionary said.

Bank staff protest proposed merger

On a joint call given by the State Sector Bank Employees Association (comprising employees of associate banks State Bank of Patiala, State Bank of Hyderabad, State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur and State Bank of Indore), the All-India Bank Officers’ Association and Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI), employees and officers of associate banks observed a day-long strike here today.

Judicial magistrate Vijay Kumar has sentenced a businessman, Kewal Kumar, to undergo one-year imprisonment in a cheque bounce case. The court has also ordered him to pay a fine of Rs 3,000.
No takers for rare books in city

Every Sunday morning, those living in old city used to wake up to the hustle at the secondhand books market near the Clock tower. As the reading habits have taken the backseat and technology has started ruling our lives; the city is helplessly watching the striving-for-survival books market, where the number of stalls has shrunk to an abysmal five or six.
Only a few turn up for buying old books from the weekly roadside stalls in a market in Ludhiana.

Seminar marks World Disability Day

The District Legal Services Authority today observed World Disability Day by organising a seminar at Manekwal village.
The seminar was presided over by Arvind Markan, assistant district attorney, district legal services authority.
Markan said those suffering from permanent or partial disability were entitled to free legal aid.
