Tribune News Service

Patiala, December 7
Additional Sessions Judge Kuldip Singh today sentenced Nabha-based DSP Rajinder Pal Singh Anand, a former ASI and three constables to life imprisonment in the Balbir Singh custodial death case.

The court had found the DSP and five other constables guilty yesterday but the announcement regarding quantum of sentence was reserved for today.

While DSP Rajinder, ASI Rajpal Singh and three constables Mohinder Singh, Vinod Kumar and Darshan Singh have been imprisoned for life and fined Rs 20,000, ASI Jasdev Singh got two-year imprisonment. Jasdev, however, was released on bail after he deposited Rs 20,000 as fine. Former Punjab minister Raja Narinder Singh met the DSP at the court.

The six police officials were found guilty in a case of alleged custodial death of Balbir Singh of Bharoh village near Nabha. Balbir was detained by the the Nabha CIA staff in 1995 on the charge of stealing utensils from a village gurdwara. Rajinder was then the in charge of the CIA staff. The body of Balbir was later found from a canal.

The court, it was learnt, based its judgement on the post-mortem report even as the family of the deceased had reached a compromise with the accused.
