40 Tiger rebels, four soldiers killed in Lanka

In north-western Mannar, at least 20 LTTE militants were killed and over 30 wounded in fierce gunbattles in south of Adampan today, it said.
Three soldiers were also killed in action while seven others sustained injuries, reports said.
“Intercepted LTTE communication has confirmed heavy casualty fingers for the Tigers,” the Media Centre for National Security said.
On the northern front, security forces inflicted heavy damages to the Tigers ahead of the Muhamalai forward defence lines this evening, the defence ministry said.
Troops manning the FDL at Nagarkovil in Northern Jaffna destroyed a LTTE bunker killing at least four Tiger rebels, the MCNS said.
In another incident in Jaffna, troops killed at least three LTTE cadre, forcing others in their bunkers to abandon and escape, the defence ministry said, adding the army destroyed a few of their bunkers.“Tiger rebels repeating their provocative criminal acts once again fired mortars towards the troops manning the Kilaly and Muhamale Forward Defence lines in Jaffna early today,” the defence ministry said in a statement.
One soldier also lost his life in self-defence during the clash, it said, adding another army man received injuries and was admitted to hospital.
“After about five minutes, a similar attack targeting the Muhamale FDL was directed by the militants but the counter-fire by security forces killed five LTTE militants,” it said. One rebel bunker was also destroyed.
Meanwhile, in Northern Vavuniya, two militants were killed in a confrontation with army troops yesterday in Kurisuddikulam. Another rebel was killed in a confrontation at Vilathikulam in Vavuniya.
In North-western Mannar, five militants were gunned down in a confrontation with army troops, it said.
In Periyathampanai in Vavuniya, two soldiers were injured in a mine explosion, MCNS said, adding three soldiers were also wounded in a mortar attack in the same area last evening. — PTI
