6 more parking sites for Ind Area

The Chandigarh administration, acting on the recommendations of the infrastructural development committee, has identified six sites for additional parking facilities in the Industrial Area here. This has been done to decongest the area in anticipation of future needs.

‘Pneumonia cases rising in the city’

Pneumonia, the largest killer disease among infants below five years in the country, is spreading its tentacles in Chandigarh. In fact, doctors have sounded a warning against persistent cough accompanied by other symptoms, including fast breathing, which could prove to be fatal if not cured in time.

Basic policing goes for a toss

The police seems to have got its priorities wrong. Even as it has gone overboard with its modernisation plans, the basic policing has apparently taken a backseat. Nothing else can explain it better than the sharp rise in crime. Senior police officials had recently introduced the latest equipment under its modernisation plan.

Dr Pannun dead

India’s former High Commissioner to Ghana and till recently Ambassador to Madagascar, Dr Daljit Singh Pannun died of cancer today morning at Fortis Hospital, Mohali.

Gas service employee alleges intimidation
Mohali, December 13
An unidentified person allegedly abused and threatened an employee of Mohali gas service in Phase V with a gun here this afternoon spreading panic among employees. Dharamvir Singh, a resident of Matour village, has lodged a complaint with the police in this regard demanding suitable action.

Lightning damages gadgets

Lightning damaged electrical gadgets in government houses in Sector 22 here early this morning. Kanwal Jot Sharma, a resident of the sector, said about 4 am, lightning struck and damaged gadgets.

Snatching cases cracked with arrest of Balongi resident

With the arrest of a Balongi resident, the police has claimed to have solved several cases of snatchings and recovered six mobile phones and about 300 gm of gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 2.50 lakh. The accused is said to be a drug addict.

Woman commits suicide

A housewife, Mamta Sharma in her mid-twenties was taken to GMCH-32 in serious condition after she was found hanging from the ceiling her parental house of in Hallomajra village here this evening.

Rlys issued notice on adulterated food
Chandigarh, December 13
The issue of poor catering service on the New Delhi-Chandigarh Shatabdi was today taken up before the UT State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. On a complaint of Pankaj Chandgothia regarding unhygienic food aboard Shatabdi, the commission issued orders to the railways to ensure that the catering staff did not serve contaminated food to passengers.

Man acquitted of rape charges
Chandigarh, December 13
The district and sessions judge, K.K. Garg, has acquitted a Lucknow resident, Mool Chand, of abduction and rape charges. Mool Chand, working at a Sector 27 sweet shop, was acquitted after the prosecution failed to prove the allegations against him.

But two others get 10-year RI
Chandigarh, December 13
The UT additional district and sessions judge, Raj Shekhar Attri, today sentenced Ramesh and Ram Chander to 10-year rigorous imprisonment in a rape case. A fine of Rs 25,000 was also imposed on them.

‘Charan Das Chor’ a bold satire

The much acclaimed play ‘Charan Das Chor’, a master piece of directorial elegance of Padmabhushan Jenab Habib Tanvir, was staged at Bhargava Auditorium here today. The event presented under the aegis of Spic-Macay, the foremost organisation engaged in the promotion and propagation of Indian arts was duly supported by the PGI Resident Doctors Association, said Dr S Lavasa, president of the Chandigarh chapter.

Punjab clinch rugby title

Punjab registered a thumping 24-10 victory over Rajasthan to lift the First Rugby 7’s National Tournament, which concluded at Panjab University grounds here today. Pradeep was the top-scorer with 10 points, followed by Gurbinder (7 points), Harpreet (5) and Sukhbir (2).

Equipment, not talent, hurting India: Rower

Meticulous training and good rowing infrastructure and paraphernalia are some factors that give European countries an edge over others, feels local international rower Manjit Singh. “After seeing the preparation and latest equipment of foreign teams during the Germany visit for Olympics qualifiers, we felt that it was not the dearth of talent here but the scarcity of adequate facilities and infrastructure that was responsible for poor performance.
