Plywood makers to hike rates by 5 pc
Ludhiana, December 19
Hit by the rising cost of the material required, plywood manufacturers of the state have decided to hike rates by 5 per cent. This is for the second time in the past six months that the plywood rates have been increased. Manufacturers said if urgent steps were not taken by the government for ensuring the smooth supply of wood and control on rising material cost, they would lose out on buyers in other states, to whom they were currently supplying plywood worth Rs 40 crore.

Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal has taken upon himself to save the Sidhwan canal from going the Budda Nullah way following an initiative by a local resident who is arranging for resources. Baba Seechewal has agreed to visit the city in the third week of January and 500 metres of the canal will be cleaned initially.

Transporters fined; raise slogan against DTO

A large number transporter raised slogans against a district transport officer in protest against the “harassment” faced by them. They had gathered outside the office for settling the challans as their vehicles were impounded by the DTO last night.

Two booked for harassing woman
Jagraon, December 19
Harnek Singh of Bhadaur and Sonu of Burj Hameeran allegedly passed obscene remarks to Baljit Kaur of Mohalla Atam Nagar, Jagraon, over telephone. Te local police has registered a case under Sections 294, 506 and 34 of the IPC. According to information, they continued to call her from October 4 to October 19. Aggrieved complainant moved an application on October 10 to the police who after investigation has now registered the case.

Dr Surinder Saggar, a scientist, working on green-house gas emissions and global warming delivered a lecture on “Climate change-some recent developments in science and politics” in an interaction programme organised in the Farmers’ Service Centre of PAU by the department of agrometeorology here yesterday.

College lecturer presents paper at Mumbai IIT

Prof Ravi Inder Singh of the department of mechanical and production engineering, Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana, presented a paper at the first international conference on “Advances in energy research” at IIT, Mumbai.

PAU teacher to get citriculture fellowship

The PAU senior horticulturist, Dr Pushpinder Singh Aulakh, working as director, regional station, Abohar, has been selected for the award of fellowship by Nagpur-based Indian Society of Citriculture (ISC). D. Aulakh has made recommendations (15) on the production technologies of different fruit crops, handled four ad-hoc research projects, and published as many as 250 research and extension publications.

After boys from Saraswati Modern School, Hambran Road, made their presence felt at a few cricket tournaments, the school authorities decided to lay a pitch for further improving their performance. Priyanka Mehta, headmistress, said besides the cricket, a basketball court, an indoor badminton hall and a track had been laid for children to practise.
