Phagwara, December 19
Over expectations of his parents reportedly forced a student of Lovely Professional University to commit suicide.

Rahul Bajaj (17) of Bikaneri road in Fazilka of Ferozepur district allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison in the university hostel falling under the jurisdiction of the Chaheru police post of Phagwara Sadar police station of Kapurthala district.

In a note, Rahul, a student of computer science diploma, stated the reason for his extreme step as his inability to fulfil the high expectations of his parents in studies, ASI of Chaheru police post Sukhdev Singh told The Tribune.

In the one-page suicidal note, addressed to his parents, Rahul further stated “I tried my best to fulfil your expectations but my brain is bursting. My last wish is that my parents should not feel sad about my death and should remain happy” (mammi-papa mainu achha beta banana chahte si, main bahut koshish kiti par dimag phatan nu karda. Meri last ichhaa hai ki tusi meri maut da gum na karna te hamesha khus raho).

Corporate communicator of the university Aman Mittal said the student was not so good in studies. His parents had told them that he had also been suffering from depression for about past two years.

The ASI said Rahul had consumed some poisonous substance at around 7.30 pm the previous day but he died at a private Satyam Hospital in Jalandhar at 6 am today.

Rahul did not go with his roommates in the mess to take dinner, saying that he was unwell. When his roommates returned after taking their dinner, he told one of them that he had consumed some poisonous substance.

The body of the student was sent to the civil hospital for a post-mortem examination, the ASI said, adding that no case was registered against anyone as Rahul had not held anybody responsible for his suicide. A routine action under Section 174 of CrPC was taken in this regard.

This is a third death of a student of the university within a month. Sunder Singh (18), hailing from Mewat in Haryana, had allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree near Jalandhar cantonment railway station on November 22. Earlier, a girl student of Faridkot was found dead in her hostel located in Phagwara.

Mittal said all three deaths had taken place due to personal reasons of the students. Several programmes had been started in the university to destress the students.
