Moga, December 19
Additional sessions judge B.S. Sandhu today sentenced four persons, including a deputy commandant of the CRPF, to death for killing a polytechnic student nearly four years ago. He, however, acquitted Jugraj Singh of Ajitwal, in whose house the student had hired a room, and Sumandeep Kaur, for want of sufficient evidence.

Deputy commandant of the CRPF Harjinder Singh had reportedly given supari to Manjit Singh Sodhi, Harvinder Singh and Satwant Singh for eliminating his son. Counsel for the victimís family Didar Singh Matta said all four accused were present in the court.

Baghel Singh, a student of Lala Lajpat Rai Polytechnic College, Ajitwal, was kidnapped by unidentified persons on January 21, 2003. On a complaint filed by his friend Manandeep Singh, a case was registered at the Mehna police station.

The complainant had said he and Baghel, after having their meals, went to their rooms at a hired accommodation at Ajitwal. Baghel came to him after a while and told him that certain persons barged into his room and were having drinks there. Baghel asked him to inform landlord Jugraj Singh about it and returned to his room.

When Manandeep went to the room, he found that Baghel was not there.

After about 10 days, the police had found a headless body from the Abohar canal which was later identified as that of Baghel.

The CRPF authorities had directed Harjinder to pay Rs 5,000 per month to his son as study expenses. He had sent the money to his son for four months and then stopped doing so.

Matta said Harjinder had requested to the court not to listen to the arguments of his wife Charanjit as he thought that she was mentally disturbed. However, the court annulled his request. He said the accused had turned both mother and son out of the house. Both had filed several complaints against Harjinder.

Bhagelís mother Charanjit Kaur had alleged that Harjinder had extra-marital relationship with Sumandeep Kaur of Delhi and lived with her.

According to police investigation, Harjinder had hatched a conspiracy to eliminate his son. He had hired professionals to abduct and kill his own son.
