Parupkar Singh Ghumman has won the District Bar Association (DBA) by defeating his two rivals, K.R.Sikri and Parveen Talwar, for the post of presidentship. Majority of the winners are young lawyers.

Central excise detects duty evasion worth Rs 14 lakh

Officials of the Central Excise Commission have detected tax evasion worth Rs 14 lakh by Waryam Steels here. The officials, who conducted the raid on the unit on Tuesday, said the evasion was likely to run into crores.

Additional Civil Judge Tarsem Mangla has summoned Dr K S Aulakh, former vice-chancellor, Punjab Agricultural University, in Rs 1 crore suit for damages filed against him and three other university employees by Dr Balwant Singh, who had sought damages for alleged malicious prosecution.

The sale of goats in the city went into an overdrive today as devotees made purchases to celebrate Id-ul-Zuha, which falls tomorrow. Traders made hay as goat, which was worth Rs 2,500 yesterday, sold at Rs 6,000 onward today.

8 jaggery samples taken
