330 gm of RDX seized 
Mullanpur/Ludhiana, December 22
The police has found 330 gm of RDX hidden in a drainage pipe connecting two fields at Rurka village, near Mullanpur, this morning. The police said the explosive was enough to blow up a big shopping mall. It was seized from Gurinder Singh, allegedly an RDX smuggler and a Shingaar cinema blast suspect. Judicial magistrate Charanjit Arora has sentenced a businessman, Balbir Sinigh, owner of Titan Knitwears, to an imprisonment for one-and-a-half years in a cheque bounce case.

  Man gets 1-year jail for fraud
Ludhiana, December 22
Additional chief judicial magistrate K.S. Cheema has sentenced Sukhdev Singh, a resident of Partap Nagar, to one-year imprisonment in a cheque bounce case. He was also ordered to pay a fine of Rs 1,000 and a compensation of Rs 40,000 to the complainant.

The department of transfusion medicine at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) organised a voluntary blood donation camp here yesterday to mark the “Annual Voluntary Blood Donation Day.” BSc nursing students along with nursing staff of the hospital and its sister concern Hero DMC Heart Institute donated blood. Over 80 units of blood were collected during the camp.

The Sudhar police has booked Babli of Narangwal and Kala of Bhundri and seized 140 kg poppy husk from their possession. According to information, the police intercepted a car (DL-A-26) at Rajoana Khurd village during patrol and seized the contraband.

Leather brand eyes 20 pc growth
Ludhiana, December 22
Hidesign, a brand of leather products and accessories, opened its first store in Punjab here today. The company, that recorded a turnover of Rs 100 crore last year, and is expecting a 20 per cent growth this financial, would soon come up with exclusive stores in Amritsar and Jalandhar, said Dalip Kapur, company president.

Christmas celebrations at schools
Ludhiana, December 22
Christmas was celebrated with gaiety and fervour at various schools of the city. DIL’s Nursery School, Model Town Extension, was bedecked with balloons, stars and buntings for the occasion. Children came dressed up as Santa Claus, Mother Mary and fairies. Children sang carols and danced to music.

Laparoscopic kidney transplant 
Ludhiana, December 22
Dr Baldev Singh Aulakh, professor of urology, department of transplant surgery, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), has performed a urological laparoscopic procedure for the removal of the non-functioning kidney filled with pus. The condition is medically known as pyeonephrosis.

Softball meet from today

The 15th edition of the Senior Punjab State Softball Championship for men and women will be held at Guru Nanak Stadium and Ramgarhia Girls College, Miller Ganj, on December 23 and 24, according to P.N. Passi, honorary secretary, Punjab Softball Association. Probables for the Punjab squads for the forthcoming national meet will be picked from the tournament.
