Putting scores of applicants to inconvenience in revenue offices of the district and causing loss to the state exchequer, all the tehsildars and naib tahsildars proceeded on a mass casual leave for four days to protest against the Vigilance Bureau (VB) action against a revenue official in Mullanpur recently.

Daily wage workers at the receiving end
Ludhiana, January 6
In the ongoing fight between the government and transporters over the latter’s demands, 15,000 daily wage workers of Ludhiana working with various transport companies and individual transporters are on the receiving end. The stir has rendered them out of job with no alternate source of income.

Transporters hold ‘matka phod’ protest
Ludhiana, January 6
The All-India Motor Transport Congress’ (AIMTC) strike entered the second day today. To register their protest against the inadequate reduction in the prices of diesel, the Ludhiana Transporters' Welfare Association held a "matka phod" protest at Transport Nagar in which local transport unions participated. Operations were completely paralysed as no delivery of goods was made and no fresh orders were booked.

Indo-Danish cultural fest ends
Ludhiana, January 6
The Indo-Danish cultural fest today concluded with the scintillating gymnastics and rhythmic dance performance by artistes from Denmark. A team of 32 gymnasts-cum-dancers from Denmark were in India from December and after giving performances in various cities, the festival concluded today at Partap College of Education.

Online education in schools on anvil
Ludhiana, January 6
Government Senior Secondary Schools of Ludhiana district with science stream in class XII are being modernised with the facility of online education i.e. EDUSAT- educating children through education satellite. 41 schools in Ludhiana will be provided with this facility, said Baldeep Singh, a vocational teacher, Government Senior Secondary School for Boys, Jawahar Nagar camp.

Arya College teachers in agitation mood

The management and staff of Arya College here once again seem to be at loggerheads. This time on the issue of reimbursement of arrears for 1997-98. The Arya College Teachers' Union (ACTU) is supposed to meet the management in this regard tomorrow and they have threatened if the management adopted the dilly-dallying attitude, they will be forced to resort to an agitation.

Farmers get tips on safe driving
Ludhiana, January 6
The department of farm power and machinery of Punjab Agricultural University and the traffic police, Ludhiana, jointly organised a road safety camp at Punjab Agricultural University today. The camp, which aimed to educate farmers on safe driving of their tractor trolley, was part of the 20th National Road Safety Week being observed from January 1 to January 7, 2009.

First model police station to function soon
Ludhiana, January 6
Stage is all set for the first model police station to come up at Sarabha Nagar. Fully equipped with the ultra-modern facilities, this police station will start functioning officially soon, depending on the availability of the DGP NPS Aulakh.

Under-construction boutique razed
Ludhiana, January 6
The Municipal Corporation demolished under-construction Taran’s boutique in Model House here today as the owner was constructing a commercial shop while the plan approved by the town planning department of the MC was that of residential.

Surprise check to curb ticketless travelling
Ludhiana, January 6
Several teams of travelling ticket examiners (TTEs) under the supervision of senior railway officials of Ferozepur division conducted a surprise check in more than half a dozen trains at the Ludhiana-Jalandhar section till late evening against ticketless travelling.

Ludhiana, January 6 BJP councillors discussed various development works that need to be initiated in their wards with Municipal Commissioner GS Ghuman during a meeting, which was held at the Circuit House here today, in the presence of BJP district president OP Bhardwaj.

Road safety week observed
Jagraon, January 6
The Jagraon police is celebrating the Road Safety Week which will conclude tomorrow. SSP (rural) Gurpreet Singh Bhuller said the traffic education cell made public, including various unions, school and colleges, aware of traffic rules and also gave tips to ply vehicles when there was fog.

Arun Goyal and Prem Gupta were elected as president and secretary, respectively, of Shree Raghunath Hospital Society in the elections of new office-bearers, held here yesterday. In all 29 candidates were in fray for 21 members to be elected to the managing committee.

Principal Pyara Singh distributed woollen garments and shoes among needy students of Government Senior Secondary School, Kalakh, near here, yesterday. Harpreet Singh, a social activist of the village, presided over the function as the chief guest, while Vicky Cheema and Babboo Verma were the guests of honour.

2 tractors stolen, 1 recovered
Jagraon, January 6
Two new Mahindra tractors were stolen from the Khalsa Tractor Agency situated on the Ludhiana road yesterday. Thieves entered the showroom by breaking the rear wall and managed to open the main entrance.

Katoch Shield: 32 probables selected
Ludhiana, January 6
Over 70 aspirants attended the trials conducted by the Ludhiana District Cricket Association (LDCA) here yesterday on the Arya College ground, Civil Lines, and shortlised 32 probables to prepare the Ludhiana senior team for the forthcoming Punjab State Inter-District Cricket Tournament for the Katoch Shield to be organised by the Punjab Cricket Association from January 20 at different venues across the state, according to Vinod Chitkara, honorary general secretary, LDCA.
