Truckers’ Strike
UT allows ferry of goods on all vehicles
Chandigarh, January 10
On the insistence of the Department of Road Transport and Highways, the Chandigarh administration has decided to allow the use of all motor vehicles, including passenger buses, for the purpose of carrying essential commodities without the requirement of a permit under Section 66 (3) (n) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

2 held for selling vehicles on bogus papers
Mohali, January 10
A well-organised inter-state racket of sale of vehicles on the basis of fake registration documents has been unearthed by the CIA wing of the police. To evade the police, the gang used to get vehicles financed on the basis of fake documents.

Shopowner attacked; store vandalised

A confectionery store in the posh Sector 10 market was vandalised here this morning. Five youths reportedly vandalised the store at around 10.30 am.

Police cracks murder case, arrests three
Patiala, January 10
The Patiala police claimed to have solved a murder case with the arrest of a troika of gangsters here today. SSP, Patiala, SK Asthana, disclosed that a team led by Gurmeet Singh Chouhan, SP (detective), unravelled the mystery behind the murder of Madan Gorkha who was done to death in the busy Rajpura colony area of this city on the intervening night of December 13 and 14 last year.

505 boxes of liquor seized
Dera Bassi, January 10
The Dera Bassi police today recovered 505 boxes of liquor being smuggled from Chandigarh to other states. They seized two trucks containing 300 boxes and 205 boxes, respectively, said the Dera Bassi SHO.

Man accuses police of inaction
Kalka, January 10
Madan Lal, a resident of Upper Mohalla here, has written letter to Chief Minister, Haryana, Chief Justice, Punjab and Haryana Court, Home secretary and DGP of Haryana, and SP, Panchkula, accusing the local police for inaction. Madan has alleged in the complaint that the police is trying to shield the accused, Pawan Sharma and Sanjay Chauhan, despite the fact that it had registered a case under the Sections 436, 506, 511 and 34 of IPC against them. The accused had not been arrested till date.

District and Sessions Judge KK Garg today sentenced Bhagwan Dass to life imprisonment for killing Nanhi by setting her on fire following a dispute over Rs 1,000 with deceased’s husband, Rajbir Singh.

2 accused cops depose
Chandigarh, January 10
CBI officers Subash Kundu and Mahinder Singh, accused of raping a 40-year-old woman, deposed before the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Ravi Kumar Sondhi here today. The victim also got her statement recorded. The victim, a resident of Hisar, supported the prosecution and alleged that she was raped by the accused around 30 times.

Bid to commit suicide
Chandigarh, January 10
A case has been registered against Sonu, a resident of Dadu Majra, who attempted to commit suicide at the water tank, Sector 39, yesterday. A case under Section 309 of the IPC has been registered against him at the Sector 39 police station. The accused was arrested and bailed out.
