German girl confirms rape
To be cross-examined in court today

In significant development, the 20-year-old German tourist, who was allegedly abducted from the parking lot of the Taj Hotel in September 2008, today confirmed before the Additional District and Sessions Judge R.S. Attri during an in-camera proceeding that she was raped by the accused.

Teachers to stage dharnas on January 22

The Punjab Federation of University and College Teachers' Organisations (PFUCTO), a federation representing all teachers of five universities, 54 government colleges and nearly 170 non-govt colleges of Punjab and Chandigarh, has decided to launch a struggle for implementation of new UGC pay scales notified by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) on December 31, 2008.

Parking of buses on highways continues despite ban

Admn mulls new industrial policy

The Chandigarh Administration is mulling a new industrial policy for the city. The process was set in motion at a meeting of the administration's top brass with industrialists here yesterday. Several proposals, including increase in the floor area ratio (FAR) from 1 to 1.5, upgradation of infrastructure at the industrial area, and according "industry status" to the IT industry were deliberated at the meeting.

Administration’s functioning no longer smooth
The main job of the Adviser to the Administrator, along with advising him on policy matters, is to oversee day-to-day administration of the UT. All financial powers of the Administrator stand delegated to him. Adviser acts as a revisional authority under the Capital of Punjab (Development & Regulations) Act 1952 and an appellate authority under various rules framed under the Act.

Mauli Jagran resident ‘beaten up’

Raj Kumar, a resident of Mauli Jagran, has filed a complaint with the police alleging that Vinod, Parmod, Bansi, Kavita, Sonu and others beat him up and threatened him and his relatives Sanjan Kumar and Rakesh yesterday. A case under Sections 323, 506 and 34 of the IPC has been registered at the Manimajra police station.

Patiala resident booked on rape charge

The police has booked a Patiala resident on the charges of raping a local woman on the pretext of marrying her. The victim alleged that the accused had concealed the fact from her that he had already married.

The police booked a Manimajra resident on the charges of a duping a man of Rs 10 lakh on the pretext of selling him a piece of land.

Ex-Air Force personnel commits suicide
Mohali, January 16
A retired Air Force personnel reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his Phase X residence here today morning. The victim, Gosh Bihari Basak (67), was found hanging from the window grill of the bathroom by his family members. The victim’s son, S. Bask told the police that his father was suffering from depression for the last few months.

Elderly couple drive away thieves
A room ransacked by thieves when the old couple was alone at home in Panchkula on Friday. Panchkula, January 16
An old couple foiled a burglary at their house at Sector 7, here yesterday. Suspecting that their house has been intruded by thieves, the couple locked the door from inside and started thrashing the door, also, they called up their relatives and police. The thieves, however, fled before the police arrived.

40-yr-old woman hangs herself to death
Chandigarh, January 16
Suffering from heart ailment, a 40-year-old woman, Rani, reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence in Ram Darbar today morning.
