Fiza in hospital, Chand elusive

A day after claiming that her husband had been kidnapped, former Deputy Chief Minister Chander Mohan, alias Chand Mohammed’s second wife, Fiza, alias Anuradha Bali, attempted suicide at her residence in Sector 48 this morning.

Man gets life term for killing wife
Chandigarh, January 29
District and Sessions Judge KK Garg today sentenced Nirmal Singh, 53, to life imprisonment for murdering his wife as she had allegedly misbehaved with him. While the court acquitted another accused Ajit Pal Singh, who was the son of the deceased.

Student politics takes backseat in PU

Poll for MC posts today

Elections for the posts of the senior vice-president and the vice-president of the Mohali Municipal Council are scheduled to held tomorrow at 3 pm. This was submitted by the Punjab state counsel before Justice Ajai Lamba of the Punjab and Haryana High Court during the hearing on the writ petition filed by Kuljit Singh Bedi, a council member, today.

Paintings depict girl child’s agony

Workshop on “Art for the girl child” at Government College for Girls, Sector 11, concluded today. Fifteen artists from the region participated in the workshop. Students from various colleges of the city learnt painting skills under the guidance of popular painters. The paintings, portraying the problems of the girl child, were depicted in a varied and versatile manner.

Son gave tough fight to assailants

Amrit Pal Singh (22), the son of jeweller and financier Satinder Pal Singh, who was shot dead on Wednesday late evening near Gurdwara Kalgidhar Sahib on Arya College road, had given a tough fight to the assailants and even managed to seriously injure one of them.

Four cops move court against FIR cancellation

In a move to ensure that the FIR against Ram Gopal, a cop, is not cancelled, the four other cops have filed an application in the Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Sumit Ghai’s court, seeking rejection of the cancellation report. The application has also sought for another probe into the case.

Groping in the dark for the third day, the local police today announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for the person providing information about the accused of the dacoity at PC Jewellers, in Sector 14, here.

Rs 18,000 stolen from house
Chandigarh, January 29
The local police registered a case on the complaint filed by Rakesh Chopra, a resident of Sector 11, alleging that his tenants, namely Ashish Bhatia of Mandi Gobindgarh, Puneet Bansal, Tilak Raj and one more person, threatened him and stolen Rs 18,000 from his house. The accused have been arrested. A case has been registered at the Sector 11 police station.

Robbers decamp with valuables worth Rs 1 lakh
Panchkula, January 29
Burglars once again struck in the city and decamped with jewellery and valuables worth more than Rs 1 lakh from a house in Sector-14 here today. A lock of the neighbouring house was also fond damaged indicating that an attempt was also made to intrude into the house. Incidentally house No. 233 from where the robbers stolen valuable is in the vicinity of the Chief Judicial Magistrate and Sub- Divisional Officer’s residences.

Two youths arrested
Panchkula, January 29
CIA staff of the Kalka police has arrested two youth for looting residents at Kalka near here today. The accused have been identified as Nitin and Gaurav Rana of Tipra and Tibbi Mohalla. Two of their accomplices have been absconding.

Indian lad in New Zealand squad
Chandigarh, January 29
It will be a challenging tournament ahead for 24-year-old Priyesh Bhana, the only player from Indian origin in New Zealand Hockey team, who will be debuting in the international arena by partaking in the upcoming Punjab Gold Cup Hockey Tournament to be held here at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium. “I have had good games this season that got me berth in the national squad and now it will be a challenge for me to keep up the good work and perform better in the tournament,” he said.

Germany biggest hurdle to cross: Prabjot Singh

180 kids attend tennis trials
