PAU gets hotline connection
Ludhiana, February 4
It seems that the research work and pending projects at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), which had taken a back seat due to regular power cuts in recent months, will be accomplished in near future as finally the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) today released the hotline connection to the varsity. The connection was released by the Chairman, PSEB, HS Brar, at PAU where he was invited as the chief guest at the annual athletics meet.

Sub-Registrar offices without safe chests
Risking their lives, staff carry cash home and bring it back the next day

Even as the Sub-Registrar (SR) offices in the district collect lakhs of rupees every day on account of registration fee on sale deeds, these do not have safe chests to keep the cash in contravention of norms that provide for it.

Steel looks down, thanks to recession

Steel prices which had touched an all-time high at one time during 2008 have started crashing in the wake of no demand. The steel prices started rallying immediately after the global meltdown in September last. The prices of steel like HR coil had touched Rs.52,000 per tonne and MS rounds 42,000 per tonne which were described as the highest ever prices of steel.

LIC staff protest against privatisation move

Life Insurance Corporation employees, under the banner of the Northern Zone Insurance Employees' Association, formed a human chain in protest against the Insurance Amendment Bill-2008, which was introduced in the last Parliament session by the UPA government, at Bhadaur House.

More flats likely to come up in city

If the proposal mooted by the department of local self government, Punjab, materialises, the Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) will soon be in the process of constructing flats on vacant lands owned by the Municipal Corporation (MC) in different parts of the city.

Old woman burnt alive
Samrala, February 4
An elderly woman was burnt to death after a fire suddenly broke out at her house at Bondli village near here. Malkit Kaur (70), the victim, was alone at her house when this incident took place. Her husband had died three years ago and they had no sibling. A few neighbours saw the flames emitting out of the house at about 2.4 am last night.
