Abohar
3 killed in road mishap
: Three members of a marriage party were killed and 15 others injured, as the bus carrying them turned turtle near village Chishtian on the outskirts of Hanumangarh on Tuesday. Four of the seriously injured, were rushed to Bikaner. The bus was carrying the party from Ramgarh in Alwar district. The dead were identified as Deep Chand Saini (38), Mange Ram (30) and Narayan Dass (42). A case has been registered.

Rainbow hues
: Students of the Eastwood International School presented ‘Rainbow Hues’ during the annual function of the kindergarten. Dean of the school, Beena Rao spoke on the occasion. Some of the issues highlighted by the children were ‘save the girl child’ and ‘save environment’.

Mock test: The Gulati Institute conducted a mock test on Sunday where students from local schools took part. The test aimed at preparing the students for the forthcoming board exams and contained questions on Science and Mathematics. The result would be announced on February 25. A cash prize of Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 would be given to students securing first and second positions, respectively.

Patwar union: Dharna of the Revenue Patwar Union, sub-division Bathinda, entered into the second day of its protest on Tuesday. The protesters have been demanding various allowances, increase in the salary grade besides other appointment and retirement related issues. Among others, S.L. Grover, Jagnandan Singh, Gurtej Singh and Balwinder Singh addressed the gathering.

NFL field day: The D&C cell of the NFL here organised a field day in Pucca Kalan and Falad on Monday. Dr Amarjeet gave detailed information about the production of wheat, vegetables and fruits to the people. Vippan, Senior Manager, along with Gurdiyal Singh sensitised the people on agriculture and urea use. Free samples of urea were distributed among the villagers.

Panel meets Manpreet
:Members of Punjab Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisations (PFUCTO), led by its general secretary Dr Jagwant Singh, met Manpreet Singh Badal, Finance Minister, Punjab, today. They apprised him about the MHRD notification dated December 31, and discussions with the Punjab government on the subject, including those with CM Parkash Singh Badal on February 13.

Stir by bank staff
: On the call given by the State Sector Bank Employees Association, the employees of the State Bank of Patiala observed total strike on Tuesday and held a demonstration in front of the city branch of the bank. The employees protested against the move to merge the associate banks with SBI. Sukhdeep Bhardwaj, oranising secretary, All India State Bank of Patiala Employees Federation, said due to the adamant approach of the SBI management, the employees had to resort to strike. Kanwaljit Bhui, executive member, SSBEA, said if the management did not relent, they would intensify stir.

Fighting social evils: Manjit Singh Sodhi and Malook Singh Bhadru have been elected as state president and vice-president of the Bhai Bala Ji Human Rights Society, Punjab. Sodhi said the society had been working against social evils like female foeticide and drug abuse.

Excellent rating for NFL
:National Fertilizers Limited (NFL), one of the leading producers of nitrogenous fertiliser in the country, has received excellent rating for 2007-08 under the MoU System of the Government of India.This is consecutively for the eighth year in succession that the company received excellent ratings since 2000-01. The Department of Public Enterprises introduced the MoU System in 1991-92. Since then, NFL has been signing an MoU with the government. NFL, during 2007-08, had produced 32.68 lakh tonnes of urea with overall capacity utilisation of 101 per cent.

2 booked for cyber crime
:The local police booked two persons for cyber crime following a complaint by Amrish Singla, a resident of Panchkula, yesterday. According to the police, Amrish Singla stated in his complaint that Rakesh Garg, a resident of Sector-4, and Deepak Gupta, a resident of Sector 15, allegedly hacked his e-mail account and allegedly gathered some important information from the account. A case has been registered.

Cricket trials at Saupin’s
: Saupin’s School, Chandigarh, will hold trials for proficiency in cricket for their sports quota admissions on February 22 at 3.30 pm on the school premises. Cricket coach Sukhwinder Bawa, Pavan Sharma (Himachal player) and Deepak Lohtiya (PTI, Saupin’s School) will conduct the trials. Those interested may report to Deepak at the scheduled time.

Girl electrocuted
: Girja, in her early 20s, was electrocuted to death at her residence in Azad Colony, here today. A neighbour said the victim was heating water with a heating rod when she suffered an electric shock. She was taken to the General Hospital, Sector 6, where doctors declared her brought dead. The police said the body had been sent to the mortuary at the general hospital.

Cash, jewellery stolen
: Thieves reportedly broke into Krishna Devi’s house in Kosli on Monday and decamped with cash and jewellery said to be worth Rs 45,000 and a mobile phone. The incident took place at 11 am when Krishna Devi, who is teacher, had gone out for work. A case has been registered.

INA veteran dead:Veteran freedom fighter Pahlad Singh died at Kosli today. He was 95. He was a soldier in the Indian National Army (INA) of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. He was cremated with state honours. Kosli Tehsildar Jitender Yadav, former state BJP chief Om Prakash Grover and state BJP Kisan Morcha secretary Laxman Singh Yadav paid floral tributes to him.  Security for MLA Disposing of a petition by Haryana MLA-cum-leader of Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) Rakesh Kamboj, Justice Tej Pratap Singh Mann today directed Haryana to provide a gunman security to the petitioner. Justice Mann directed the security of one gunman would remain available to the petitioner Kamboj till the next general elections of Haryana Vidhan Sabha due in February next year.

Footwear store gutted
: A footwear store was gutted in a fire at Ellenabad town in the district on Monday. According to the owner of the store, Madan Khurana, goods worth Rs 2 lakh have been destroyed. Clothes kept in the neighbouring shop also gutted.

Case registered: A cow died and other five received injuries when a canter that was taking them overturned near Kalanwali town in the district on Tuesday. The police has registered a criminal case under the Animal Cruelty Prevention Act against unidentified canter-borne persons as they fled the spot after the accident, leaving behind the canter and injured cows.

Declamation contest: Lala Hans Raj Phutela College of Law will organise a declamation contest on global terrorism on February 21. Principal of the college Anupam Ahluwalia said Dr RS Sangwan, chief patron of the Sirsa Education Society that runs the college, would be the chief guest.

3 persons remanded
: A three-day police remand was given on Tuesday to three persons, who were arrested on Monday in the town with 1,200 gm of charas. SP Kuldip Sharma said a police party raided the residence of Udal Singh, a resident of Bijnaur, and recovered charas from his possession and arrested him. Two more persons Abdul of Najibabad and Shamim of Betia in Bihar were also arrested at Udal Singh’s instance.

Memorandum submitted: A deputation led by Berry Rajadyan Guru Ravi Dass Sabha president Tulsi Dass Bansal and vice-president Prem Lal met SP Kuldip Sharma here on Tuesday and presented him a memorandum demanding an impartial inquiry into Guru Ravi Dass temple demolition by some individuals. The deputation expressed dissatisfaction with the police investigation up till now. The SP gave an assurance that another senior officer would be deputed for the inquiry and justice would be ensured in this matter at the earliest.

: The National Forum of Awareness and Development, an NGO, has sought from the state government to set up a transmission and construction division of the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board (HPSEB) at the district headquarters town of Chamba. This would accelerate work on the ongoing construction activities of 220 KV power sub-station at Karian, which is being constructed at a cost of Rs 82 crore.

Cong leader’s missive to EC
: Former president of the Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee and former Rajya Sabha MP Harish Rawat has shot off a letter to the Election Commission accusing the Chief Minister of misusing the official machinery for the campaign of the party candidates for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. He has urged the Election Commission to issue directions so that the Chief Minister should stop making announcements of the new development projects during his tour to different parts of the state in the helicopter.

Transferred: Deepak Jyoti Ghildiyal, SSP, Udham Singh Nagar, has been transferred as DIG (Intelligence/Security), Intelligence Headquarters, Uttarakhand. GN Goswami, superintendent of police, Chamoli, has been appointed as SSP Udham Singh Nagar. Vimmi Sachdeva, Commandant 40 Company, PAC, Haridwar, will take over as SP Chamoli. The work of Commandant 40 Company, PAC, Haridwar, will be looked after the Deputy Commandant till further orders.

Annual report submitted: Chairman of the State Public Service Commission SK Das met Governor BL Joshi today and submitted the annual report of the Commission for the year 2007-08. Speaking on this occasion, Joshi said Public Service Commission played an important role in the progress of the state because the officials selected by the Commission served the state for a period of 30 to 35 years.
