3 education board officials suspended
Mohali, March 3
The Punjab School Education Board today ordered the suspension of three officials of the publication wing for their alleged involvement in the scam involving the release of payment of lakhs of rupees to certain private printers without books having been supplied to the board.

Convicting the former head of the department of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, PGI, Prof RS Dhaliwal, of criminal conspiracy and forgery, the CBI Special Court of Jagdeep Jain today sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment for five years.

41 structures pulled down

Demolition drive at Maloya
Chandigarh, March 3
As part of the anti-encroachment measures an enforcement team of the Chandigarh Administration carried out a demolition drive in Maloya village yesterday. During the drive, an unauthorised shed-cum-godown constructed on agricultural land in the village was demolished.

Cooperative House Building Societies
GMADA may raise allotment rate
Mohali, March 3
The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) is contemplating to increase the rate of allotment of land to the 13 cooperative house building societies that are being allotted in Mohali. Though the exact rate is being worked out, a rate of around Rs 10,000 per sq yard has reportedly been recommended.

Indian judge elected to UN tribunal

Justice Kamaljit Singh Garewal of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has made it to the UN Appeals Tribunal (UNAT). Available information suggests, Justice Garewal has been elected to tribunal for a seven-year-term beginning July 1, after getting highest number of 154 votes in the 192-member General Assembly.

Implement notification, UGC tells Punjab

University Grant Commission has directed the Punjab Government to immediately implement the notification issued by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) Government of India, dated December 31 2008, revising the pay scales of the teachers, equivalent cadre and administrative post in the university and colleges as per the Sixth Central Pay Commission.

Two gangs of robbers busted
Patiala, March 3
The Patiala police busted two gangs of robbers active in the area of Patiala, Mohali and adjoining districts of Haryana. SSP Arpit Shukla today said during investigation, eight members of a gang, headed by Sukhdev Singh, a resident of Jhungian village, near Patiala, confessed their crime and the police also recovered a .315 bore country made pistol along with four live cartridges and some other lethal weapons from their possession.

3 kids booked for killing playmate

Three children were today booked for killing their 12-year-old playmate, Ricky. On February 27, Ricky, a resident of Bangala Basti, and three other children were playing at the rear of an abandoned cold store.

A Chandigarh-based jeweller was booked today for cheating a resident of Mohali. Jaspinder Singh, a resident of Phase VI, Mohali, told the Kharar police that he had given Rs 1.5 lakh cash and 310.5 gram of old gold jewellery to Roopinder Singh, a jeweller at Sector 35, Chandigarh.

2 caught stealing manhole covers
Chandigarh, March 3
Shopkeepers of the Azad booth market in Sector 20-D caught two youngsters red-handed while stealing manhole covers. It was later found that the two were not just any other thieves as they replaced iron covers with cemented ones, instead of decamping with the booty.

Two houses burgled
Chandigarh, March 3
Thieves struck at two houses in different parts of the city and took away valuables from there. Nachattar Singh of NAC Shivalik Enclave, Mani Majra, alleged that 25 cast-iron bars and other articles were stolen from his residence on the intervening night of March 1 and 2.

While the bodies of the financier and his son remained untraced even after the search of three days in the canal, the family members have apprehended on the conclusion of the police over the investigation stating that the accused might have misguided the police concocting the story of the murder of Vinod Mittal and 4-year-old Yashan.

Rape accused held
Panchkula, March 3
The local police has arrested Chander Bhan (26), a rape accused, here today. The police booked Chander, a resident of Bhainsa Tibba village in Mansa Devi Complex, for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl from his locality yesterday. A case under Sections 376, 363, 366 and 506 of the IPC was registered against the accused.
