Code complaints flood commission
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, March 10
Complaints related to violation of the Model Code of Conduct in both Haryana and Punjab are piling up with the Election Commission. It has been alleged that several departments of the Haryana government continue to disburse discretionary grants to various institutions and agencies in violation of the code.

In Punjab, a municipal corporation has been accused of issuing back-dated cheques to make payments. Complaints have come in of transfers and promotions effected without seeking the permission of the Election Commission.

Several complaints relate to misuse of government vehicles, hoardings put up with photographs of political leaders at the cost of public exchequer and defacing government property. One of the complaints relate to houses of BPL (Below Poverty Line) families painted with party colours.

Amidst allegations and counter allegations flying around, Union Minister of Tourism and Culture, Ambika Soni on Tuesday promised deployment of Central forces in Punjab for the conduct of a free and fair poll.
